Reflective – Alex Ohm’s debut EP is out today

Released today, Alex Ohm’s debut EP, At First A Drop, Then A Flood, was recorded at RML Studios with producer Ryan Pinson and mastered by Pete Maher, who has previously worked with the Rolling Stones, The Killers and U2.

It’s the first release from the West Midlands-based musician and follows a number of sell-out headline shows, as well as support slots with Ocean Colour Scene and Jack Savoretti.

Speaking about lead single Every Ocean, Alex says: “Every Ocean came about with the arrival of my nephew combined with where I was at in my life. It’s a kind of . . . ‘if I could give you some words of advice’ sort of song that basically says: whatever you do in life, do what’s right for you because you’ll never please everyone anyway.”

Having been influenced by Bill Ryder-Jones, The National and alt-J, Alex’s debut EP channels elements of all three. It marks as a fresh start for Alex and is a long time in the making.

“The EP has that reflective feel to it. For me it’s a way of moving on from past musical projects and taking a new direction, finding myself and feeling fulfilled by the music I’m making.” Formerly a member of The Lines, Alex has gigged across the world, performing support slots for Peter Doherty, The Charlatans, Ian Brown and an appearance at the South by SouthWest festival in Autsin, Texas.

Armed with four completely new heartfelt tracks At First a Drop, Then a Flood has a contemplative feel to it. For Alex, though, it was just about getting back in the studio and putting his mark on things.

“I recorded the majority of the EP at RML Studios with a good friend of mine, Ryan Pinson (God Damn),” explains Alex.

“We began by making music for companies to use for their corporate events and that’s when I began getting back into writing again. It was clear that we have a great working relationship.

“I have also been working closely with another friend, Julianne Bourne to arrange strings and bring that orchestral sound to some songs. It’s been a great experience getting back in the studio and involving various friends in the recording process.”

One of the tracks from the EP, Through The Storm, was also used by John Lewis for their advert upon the opening of their Birmingham store.

Alex will play The Victoria, Birmingham tomorrow to mark the launch of his new EP with further live show to follow.

At First a Drop, Then a Flood is out today and will be available on CD, as well as digitally via iTunes, Spotify, SoundCloud and more.
