Who's a pretty bird then? Parakeet pops up on traffic camera

Smile for the birdie! At least that's what this brightly-coloured parakeet appears to be saying as he peers into a speed camera suspended over one of the UK's busiest motorways.

It is not known how the exotic-looking bird had found himself on the M6 in Staffordshire but it could be that the green-feathered nosy parker may have lost his way along the Midlands' myriad of motorways.

The birds are thriving in areas of London because of the UK's warmer winters. Experts believe there could now be as many as 30,000 of them in the capital.

The birds, which are not native to Britain, are descended from escapees from zoos and pet shops.

This picture was taken at 11am at Junction 16 for Kidsgrove by the Highways Agency, which monitors the motorways, who then put out on Twitter.

Spokeswoman Pragati Baddhan said: "We think this little chap was trying to 'tweet' us."
