The discount food retailer has not confirmed an exact date for when work will begin on the 1,254 sq metres glass-fronted store on the Bilston Street car park site.

An Aldi spokesperson said: “We will begin construction of our new Sedgley store in spring and plan to open the store in autumn. This will create up to 40 jobs and enable local people to shop and save closer to home.”

The car park next to Queen Victoria Primary School has been closed to the public for parking since the summer.

The store site will take in the former Goulds electrical store and council housing offices sites and take part of the car park of the Red Lion pub off Bullring.

The site will be accessed via Bilston Street, with 91 car parking spaces and new landscaping at the boundaries. A new, smaller 20-space car park will be available for customers of the Red Lion which will have a new entrance in Mill Bank next to the puhb building.

There will be four electric vehicle charging points with infrastructure installed for additional charging points in future.

Free car parking at the Aldi store will be for up to 90 minutes.
