It's the month that gives men the chance to show off their facial hair credentials – while raising money for charity at the same time.

Movember has become an annual national craze and this year is set to be no different.

Since 2003 the Movember Community have raised around £350 million, funding 800 programmes in 21 countries.

It all goes towards men affected by prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health problems. Statistics show that as many as 79 per cent of men would not tell their boss about a mental health concern.

The idea is that men start clean-shaven on November 1 and grow their moustaches for 30 days, while getting their family, friends and work colleagues to donate to their hair-growing efforts. Women, too, are encouraged to get involved by recruiting the men in their lives to take part.

The movement had humble beginnings in Australia 11 years ago when 30 men were the first to take part. It has since gone on to be done by as many as four million people across the world.

Sarah Coghlan, UK director for Movember, said: "Our vision is to have an everlasting impact on men's health, and the Movember moustache puts a fun twist on this serious issue"

Paul Farmer, chief executive of mental health charity, Mind, says: "There is an urgent need for more services that cater for men in the UK, some of whom are less comfortable discussing emotional issues.
