Coady took the armband for the first half, skippering a young XI before handing over to Carl Ikeme after the break. The 23-year-old was vociferous throughout the game and earned praise from boss Kenny Jackett for his performance.

Coady said of being captain: "It was a massive honour to captain such a club like this. Whether it's at Cork or Molineux it's just a massive honour.

"I loved every minute of it. 'Kemes came on at half-time and I'm sure he'd have had a few choice words if I never game him the armband!

"(Talking) is part of my game. I was there to help the young lads. I know what it's like to play a first-team game as a young boy and they did really well, I was really impressed by all of them.

"I really enjoyed it. It was good to get 90 minutes under my belt, I really needed it.

"I thought the young boys did well. They played some good football and we were solid."

Regular first-team players such as Coady are getting to know the next batch of academy/under-21 prospects throughout the six-day Ireland trip.

And this was the first opportunity for them to shine in a first-team game.

So who stood out for Coady?

"CJ (Connor Johnson) at the back was fantastic," he told the Express & Star. "I thought Bright (Enobakhare) shone – he always does anyway, he's a top player. And Niall (Ennis) did really well up top.

"Ben (O'Hanlon) was really good too, he got forward up and down really well.

"They'll have been nervous but they came through it brilliantly.

"The gaffer said he enjoyed watching them, and they could benefit from playing in a game like this.

"A few of them are singing for us on Tuesday night which we can't wait for!

"All of the seniors have made them welcome. The longer they're around us the better it will be for them."
