The Irishman was named fans' and players' player of the season at Tuesday's ceremony in Telford.

He also took home the goal of the season gong to make it a triple crown.

And the determined 24-year-old wants the same again in 2016/17. "We're finished now but I kind of can't wait for pre-season to get going again," he said.

"That's the mindset I have – I'm not thinking 'Oh, I can't wait to go on holiday'.

"I can't wait to get back at it.

"It's not really sunk in yet. To win the three awards – goal of the season can go to anyone – to win the fans and players' player hasn't sunk in.

"I'm sure it will when I'm back home with my family and I look at my phone and see the messages saying congratulations.

"It's quite a special achievement.

"I don't know what to say. I was going up on stage thinking, 'Is this really happening?' every time I went up.

"It has happened and I'm so thankful for that."

Doherty has only been a regular in Kenny Jackett's team since first being tried out at left-back away at Sheffield Wednesday on December 20.

He has proved to be a revelation in the unorthodox role, after previously spending his career at right-back.

Doherty added: "I didn't play much for the first half of the season, but it's just a realisation that when I get in I have to stay in. I can use it (the awards) as motivation to try to do it again next season.

"I've managed to turn it around and it feels pretty special.

"Performance-wise you're looking to do the best you possibly can and hopefully that's good enough to do it again next year.

"A massive thank you to the fans. It's been a tough season on the pitch but they've supported us throughout.

"I'm just glad I could give them a few moments of joy and happiness throughout the season. So thank you so much to them."

Doherty also has an outside chance of ending the season on an even higher note in the Ireland squad for Euro 2016.

He added: "We'll see what happens. If I somehow get in that'll be unbelievable – but if not it's not the end of the world."
