The chief executive, speaking at Tuesday night's end of season dinner, said Wolves were talking to people who were prepared to buy Steve Morgan's shares.

And he was unstinting in his belief that success is just around the corner at Molineux.

Moxey said: "We remain full of optimism about the future. We're talking to people who may be prepared to buy Steve Morgan's shares.

"They're seeing what those of us on the inside of the club know about Wolves – and it's more attractive than many people might be able to see."

Moxey stated there had been 'many expressions' of interest, and that potential owners had visited both Molineux and Compton Park.

He wrote in the award evening's brochure: "We have had many expressions of interest from potential new owners since it was revealed that the club is up for sale, as well as several visits from interested parties both to Molineux and Compton Park.

"At the time of writing, it remains to be seen whether any of this interest is transformed into something more substantial that I can talk about publicly, but rest assured everything that can be done is being done to expedite a change in ownership.

"Given that everything in football can change so quickly - and we don't like speaking about such matters until there is something concrete to say - no one should be surprised if in the not-to-distant future we have some very positive news to share - it really can happen like that."

Wolves finished 14th in the Championship this season, way below their stated minimum target of sixth.

Moxey admitted it had been a 'very challenging' season.

And he added at the ceremony: "With the club being put up for sale, coupled with the difficult season we've had, we understand supporter hopes may have been replaced by a sense of frustration, apathy, and perhaps even hopelessness about the future.

"However even though we've just finished 14th, no-one here is comfortable with that. In fact we're frustrated, we're angry, and it's not okay – it's not good enough for Wolverhampton Wanderers.

"Regardless of the mitigating circumstances, of which there are many, we must do better."

Boss Kenny Jackett has come under pressure this season but Moxey again defended the Wolves boss.

He said: "On Saturday (versus Sheffield Wednesday) he notched up his 150th game in charge

"I want to thank you for your efforts this season – I know you've been very frustrated, as we all have."
