"We didn't really come close this season," was the honest assessment from Matt Doherty as he admitted Wolves have been short of confidence.

Kenny Jackett's team were playing their penultimate fixture of a disappointing campaign away at Nottingham Forest today.

They then host Sheffield Wednesday next weekend to bring 2015/16 to a close – and for many fans the season can't end quickly enough.

A run of three wins in 18 has dropped Wolves to no fewer than 17 points off the stated target of a top six finish.

And player of the year contender Doherty said he too was looking forward to the season ending.

"We're a long way off, to be honest, this season," he said.

"We didn't really come close

"We won four in a row over Christmas which gave a lot of people hope, including myself, but we just died off.

"I'm glad to get the season out of the way, to be honest, so we can get back in for pre-season and give it a good go next season."

A number of factors have contributed to Wolves' poor form, not least a horrendous injury list.

And Doherty said that, combined with a lack of confidence, had probably been the two biggest reasons for an underwhelming campaign.

"Injuries haven't helped, that's not the full reason, but we've had some key players missing," he said.

"I just think we've had a lack of confidence. I don't know why that is.

"We lost at home to Cardiff and after that our confidence just went, and I don't think it should have.

"A change of personnel doesn't help but players coming in should be up to it as well.

"And results we've had have completely taken confidence away from us.

"There are many different factors. With a couple of additions we'll have a good squad next year."

Goals have been Wolves' problem of late, especially at home with no one finding the net since Doherty scored a last minute winner against Bristol City on March 8.

Doherty added: "I don't think it's bad luck – I don't believe in luck at all.

"We're not creating a lot. I just think we lack a bit of creativity at times.

"Again maybe it's a lack of confidence.

I don't know, I'm not the one getting the chances, I wish I was!"
