Kenny Jackett defends Joe Mason decision

Wolves boss Kenny Jackett defended his decision to leave out Joe Mason after his team drew a blank against Blues.

Supporters chanted loudly for Jackett to send Mason on as a substitute in the second half.

But the £3m January signing wasn't introduced until the 85th minute.

Jackett said he feels Mason is better suited to a 4-4-2 formation.

"It was a period where we needed more, definitely," he said of the late change.

"And it did look like a set piece either end was going to be a key. So making sure we had our defensive setup was very important.

"It's been difficult for us to get to two up front, which ultimately I think Joe does need.

"We've lost a lot of goals in our side, even in recent weeks with James Henry and Dave Eedwards, who are capable of scoring.

"We need to find a new equation to get goals. I'm sure Joe will be part of that.

"We have a big group of players around 23, 24 and 25 years old.

"Responsibility, drive, opportunity for the players we have is a big one as we work through this period."

Michal Zyro, send on at half time, was also left out of the starting XI, with Jackett mindful of the 23-year-old suffering any recurrence of the calf injury that recently sidelined him for almost two months.

Jackett said of the Pole: "We felt he needs to come off the bench at the moment, that's the opinion of the medical people.

"We do need him in the short term, but we want him in the long term to be a very good player. (It's about) managing his body and making sure he doesn't break down again.

"He didn't have his full energy when he came on either. He lacked a big of energy, which is to be expected."
