Back at Wolves, back in the team – and just back playing.

It's been one of the most unlikely comebacks at the club in recent years.

After playing in the 3-3 League One draw away at Rotherham in December 2013, no fewer than 741 days elapsed before his next Wolves appearance.

In that time, the Icelandic striker was shipped out on loan to two clubs – Molde and Copenhagen – suffered a serious back injury and was told as recently as July that he was no longer wanted at Wolves.

"It crossed my mind I might never be coming back," he admitted.

"I've grown a lot. I'm almost two years older now – the experience from those two different teams has been valuable and great for my career to improve what I'm doing in England.

"It made me stronger and made me want it more than I did before.

"I think that's the main reason I'm back here now playing."

Sigurdarson returned to Wolves colours for the New Year's Day win at Brighton, coming on as a second-half substitute.

All was going well when he started the next game at West Ham – but then a searing pain in his back led to him being stretchered off, with supporters doubting they would see him play for Wolves again.

"I was fearing the worst," the 24-year-old said.

"That was quite scary, being carried off.

"My brain is used to having back pain – when it has a sharp pain again it just thinks well this is something wrong, and it makes me think it might be worse than it is.

"Just to be sure, they carried me off – because it was quite painful, I can tell you that.

"Bad things go through your mind. Two or three days after I felt fine, so I thought it was just unlucky, I landed a bit awkward."

After a full 10 days of training, and plenty of injury prevention work to strengthen his body, Sigurdarson returned to action at Molineux to partner new signing Joe Mason up front on Tuesday, with the pair combining for a third-minute opener when Mason slotted home after Sigurdarson's shot was blocked.

"To have him behind me was quite good," he said.

"He's different from the other guys I've been playing with. To see his skill on the ball, and his eye for the through runs, it's good to play with him,

"It's been quite fun.

"I won that challenge and was through on goal, I just thought, this is it I'm going to score right now. But just to get a goal out of that challenge and run was still amazing.

"After that West Ham injury I would have guessed that I'd have to rest for a few weeks, but being back in training and in that game two weeks after was great. Being back in that stadium, the fans, it was great.

"I felt great against Bolton, just a bit tired at the end."

Next up, Sigurdarson wants to get back on the scoresheet.

He said: "I'll definitely do my best to score goals. But right now we just need three points."
