The 32-year-old centre-back has been a key addition by Kenny Jackett with Wolves only conceding three goals from the five games in which he has featured.

But Newcastle's woes in the Premier League have forced Steve McClaren to recall the defender in a bid to shore up their leaky defence.

The Magpies were thrashed 5-1 by Crystal Palace last weekend.

Wolves boss Kenny Jackett paid tribute to Williamson:

"We understand the situation and we thank Steve McClaren and Newcastle for letting us take him on loan.

"We thank Mike as well and since he has been here we have kept three clean sheets in five games, only conceding three goals, which is a good record.

"He has been a credit to himself as a professional and we wish him all the best as he goes back to Newcastle.

"For us now we have Ethan Ebanks-Landell fit again who we think is a very promising centre back who is ready.

"And the other alternative is to use Matt Doherty and move positions around.

"Those are the options we have going into Saturday's game against Rotherham."
