The Nigerian international is a free agent having left Crystal Palace in the summer.

Aged 33, Ameobi would become Wolves' oldest player by four years if he signed, and replace the injured Nouha Dicko.

Ameobi trained with fellow Championship side Huddersfield Town last week but, despite the Terriers being interested, a deal could not be agreed.

He was at Molineux to watch Wolves draw 0-0 with leaders Brighton on Saturday and boss Kenny Jackett reckons it's a case of 'look and see' for both the club and Ameobi.

Jackett said: "We are having Shola down for a couple of days training and talks. He is a very experienced frontman who is out of contract. It is a 'look and see' both ways as he has other options."

The 6ft 3in front man scored 79 goals in 379 games during 14 years at Newcastle, although around half of those appearances were from the bench.

Ameobi was popular on Tyneside, surviving eight managers, and enjoyed his most prolific spell in the Championship in 2009-10, scoring 10 in 18 games.

Wolves came close to signing his younger brother Sammy on loan over the summer, but Jackett elected against the move and he joined Cardiff City instead.

Meanwhile, Wolves were today deciding whether to appeal Conor Coady's red card from Saturday.

Coady saw red for a strong challenge on Liam Rosenior, but Jackett was 'surprised' at the decision. He will examine the incident from different camera angles before making a decision on an appeal.

The Wolves boss said: "Like everybody in the stadium, I was surprised by the decision of a straight red. I have looked again on the video and it's inconclusive.

"But we have to accept the referee's decision and I would like to talk about my players. The way they fought and battled was fantastic in what was a heroic display."
