Forgotten striker Bjorn Sigurdarson has been offered a surprising reprieve – just two months after being told his Wolves career was over.

The Icelandic forward, currently sidelined with a back injury, was not thought to be a part of boss Kenny Jackett's plans in July.

It was expected the 24-year-old, who is out of contract next summer, would look to find a new club after regaining fitness following back surgery.

But with Wolves short of senior strikers in the wake of Nouha Dicko's long-term injury, Jackett has handed Sigurdarson an olive branch.

The Wolves chief said: "Potentially, there's a centre-forward there. If it unlocks his potential, I will be front of the queue but it will be four to six weeks until he's really back.

Number one, he's got to get fit after his back operation. He told me the back injury is something that's troubled him for some time, over maybe years and, hopefully, he'll be OK after that.

"When he's fully fit, he has a lot of pace. We'll assess the situation for him individually and the striking department. I wouldn't hesitate to use him if I think he is right."

Sigurdarson, a £2.4million signing from Norwegian outfit Lillestrom in 2012, was last seen in a Wolves shirt in December 2013.

Meanwhile, club captain Danny Batth's comeback is likely to continue on Monday for the under-21 side at Swansea.

Wolves had hoped to arrange a behind-closed-doors friendly this week and, potentially, then play Batth in that and then the Capital One Cup tie at Middlesbrough next Tuesday.

But with no friendly materialising, Batth's first-team comeback may have to wait.

Jackett added: "He's close now, it's just in terms of match fitness rather than him getting over his injury, which is good.

"I want him to come into the team and hit top form. It'll be a huge boost. He looks in good shape."
