Kenny Jackett hailed a good performance from his side and felt Wolves again earned their luck as they claimed a point at home to Hull City.

Wolves came from behind to draw 1-1, with Allan McGregor's clanger handing James Henry the equaliser after Nikica Jelavic's penalty put Hull ahead.

Jackett felt the penalty – awarded for Kortney Hause's push on former Albion defender Curtis Davies – was harsh.

And he also defended his surprising decision to drop goalkeeper Carl Ikeme.

Ikeme was surprisingly left out on footballing reasons alone for the first time in three seasons, with new Arsenal loanee Emiliano Martinez making his league debut for Wolves instead.

The Wolves boss praised his team for creating several chances in a promising overall display.

Of the penalty he said: "I felt it was a soft one but the referee's given it and that's it.

"We earned our luck with the goalkeeping mistake.

"I felt we created a number of chances – if we consistently create that amount and have the ball as much as we did I would feel confident our goals return would be good.

"Overall it was a strong performance by our players, I wasn't disappointed at all.

"I think it's a decent yardstick, Hull have got very good players and it's interesting now to see how they go in the division.

"There's a lot to build it on. I'm encouraged by a lot of how we played.

"We have to replicate that and keep creating that many chances because if we do we'll score goals.

"It's fascinating to see where you are in the division at the start of the year. Everybody else is the same.

"I'm sure an assessment after 10 games is usually where we are, but you look at every single game and it gives you signs and indications.

"I'm optimistic about the season. I feel at certain stages of the game we could find more drive but that's something you always need.

"I thought it was a good performance but fair play to Hull, they've got a lot of quality.

"They defended their box very well and when the energy went out of the game they looked more like scoring, we looked like we shot our bolt slightly.

"By the end they looked more likely to score in the last 10 minutes.

Martinez joined on loan last week and had played against Newport in the Capital One Cup, while Ikeme was at fault for Blackburn's goal in Wolves' 2-1 win at Ewood Park last weekend.

"It's a big call," Jackett said. "It's a football decision. I've got a lot of confidence in both goalkeepers and I think for us a club we'll be strong throughout the season in the goalkeeping department.

Benik Afobe of Wolverhampton Wanderers

"If you haven't got a good goalkeeper it's very difficult to get promotion in whichever league you are. I'm fully confident in the two lads we have now.

"You need two goalkeepers if you're going to be successful and at a club with the stature of Wolves it's always been our aim to make sure we have cover, competition and players driving each other on to top class performances."

Reports have again linked star striker Benik Afobe with a move to Aston Villa but Jackett added: "We're not interested in selling anybody.

"There may be one of two younger players that go out on loan and in terms of players coming in we're always looking, but I'm quite pleased with where the squad is.

"There are players on the fringe looking for chances and opportunities and with Wallace, Saville and Batth to come in I think the competition and the cover is pretty good at the moment."
