Wolves expected more from Yannick Sagbo

Wolves boss Kenny Jackett admits he expected more from striker Yannick Sagbo.

The 26-year-old on-loan Hull City forward has made three appearances in his three-month stint so far without looking like scoring.

American striker Juan Agudelo was released yesterday because the 21-year-old needs to get match-fit.

But the head coach admits Sagbo, who is eligible for a recall a week today, also looks short of sharpness.

Jackett said: "We were hoping he'd make an immediate impact – he wasn't brought in with us thinking 'we need three months with this guy.'

"It was with the intention that he could (and play) come straightaway. But he needs games to get to his sharpest.

"He looks short of match practice and he's been a substitute with me playing mainly Dave Edwards and Nouha Dicko.

"Sagbo's job is to keep pushing them and when he gets that opportunity – and he's had some minutes – to keep one out of the team."

Jackett hinted the Ivory Coast international must do more to earn more minutes.

He said: "When he gets a chance, he needs to state a case for more. It really depends on how well you show."

Meanwhile, Jackett believes fans will see a more mature Wolves after leaking three late goals to draw 3-3 at Millwall on Saturday as they prepare to host Middlesbrough tonight.

He said: "Perhaps we have to stay behind the ball more, be more compact, defend better individually, slow the game down, and retain the ball better."

Richard Stearman is preparing to make his 200th appearance for Wolves this evening, with Jackett saying: "He's done very well for me and the club.

"From 27 to early to mid-30s for a centre-back, they're good years generally and will be for Richard."

Jackett replaced Stearman and Scott Golbourne with Ethan Ebanks-Landell and Tommy Rowe on Saturday, because opponents had targeted the left side of their defence.

The Wolves boss said: "Several sides had put high and diagonal balls there and there were a lot on Saturday. I didn't think Rowe or Ebanks-Landell did a lot wrong.

"The more Ebanks-Landell plays, the more he'll improve - he has the basics to be a good defender."

Jackett then replaced Ebanks-Landell with Stearman before Millwall's equaliser, explaining: "Ethan was 'cramping up' and I wanted some experience.

"I could have put Stearman on as an extra defender, but I wanted him for his talking because we were rocking slightly."
