Wolves move closer to landing Juan Agudelo

Wolves have moved a step closer to landing Juan Agudelo after being given assurances that could lead to a short-term deal.

The United States international, who is on trial for a second week, is pursuing a Cypriot passport to allow him to play in England and has told Wolves he wants to sign for them.

Head coach Kenny Jackett said: "The option he's looking to at the moment is Wolves,. He'd like to make it at Wolves. We'd probably assess a short-term contract at first.

"He's here, he likes it, he wants to stay and he'd be very interested in coming to Wolves."

As for the work permit, Jackett said: "We could get it. He played for Utrecht last season, so it doesn't seem as if there's a problem and we'd be OK.

"He's available and he's looking for a club in this country."

Agudelo wants to play in the Premier League and other clubs are interested, but Jackett acknowledges a short-team deal at Wolves could be the answer for both parties.

He said: "I'm sure the Premier League is his aspiration but a good way to get there is to come to a Championship club, and at 21 he has time on his side to progress to that.

"Would he have other options going forward into January? Yes. I'm sure his agent is talking to other people but the fact he's here shows he's open to signing for us."

Agudelo, who was dubbed a £10million player by Stoke chief executive Tony Scholes when they failed to land him in May over work permit problems, has impressed Jackett.

He said: "That's a fantastic quote. Premier clubs can't do anything until January, so maybe that's to our advantage he's here at this particular time.

"He played against Queens Park Rangers on Friday - he did OK and at 21 he's strong and he looks like he can get a goal. He's similar to Yannick Sagbo, in terms of his power and strength. He has similar assets.

"By the end of this week we'll definitely make a decision. We've had a good look at him - we've had plenty of 11 on 11s in training to make sure we get him right."
