Kenny Jackett sets sights on the Premier League

Kenny Jackett today targeted the Premier League after sealing Wolves’ promotion from League One.

Wolves are back in the Championship after Saturday’s 2-0 win at Crewe put the League One leaders 13 points clear of third-placed Leyton Orient with four games left.

Head coach Jackett was delighted but warned his side have a tough task to get out of the Championship, a division he described as ‘the fourth biggest in Europe’.

The Molineux chief said: “We’re delighted to be back in the Championship at the first attempt and we’re all really looking forward to it because getting there was the first step.

“We’re trying to get back in the Premier League and we’re not underestimating the size of that task.

“It’s going to be hard because I believe the Championship is the fourth biggest league in Europe.

“But it was only a couple of years ago Wolves were in the Premier League and it’s our aim to be there again.

“Wolves, having a recent Premier League history, have got the ability to do that.

“We’ve got to build on this now. It’s an exciting time at Wolves and that’s what I want it to be.”

Jackett believes the majority of the current squad are good enough to challenge for promotion from the Championship next season.

“I certainly feel this squad are capable of playing in the Championship,” he said.

“Will we try to improve over the summer? Of course we will.

“If there are players who can help us, we’ll take them, but I don’t think there will be major surgery before the start of next season.

“I think it will be the nucleus of this side that remains.”

Wolves still need seven points to mathematically sure of the title after they opened up a six-point gap on second-placed Brentford, who lost 1-0 at Swindon, and Jackett is focusing his players on finishing top now.

“I want to win the league and it’s in our hands,” he said.

“In the long term, the plan is to keep improving and these are exciting times.

“We know we’ll be going into an excellent league and a very difficult league but if this could be the first step of many, it would be a great achievement by the club.”
