Steve McClaren in the frame for Wolves job

Former England boss  Steve McClaren today emerged as a contender for the vacant Wolves head coach’s job.

Steve McLaren
Steve McLaren

The 52-year-old is understood to be undaunted at the prospect of relaunching his career in the third tier after high-profile postings here and abroad.

McClaren has joined Kenny Jackett and Owen Coyle among a list of several contenders to be Dean Saunders’ successor as chief executive Jez Moxey and director of football operations and recruitment Kevin Thelwell take their time to get the right man.

Wolves say their head coach must introduce a new and attractive footballing philosophy and integrate the club’s homegrown players.

And McClaren is said to be excited at the prospect of building a club from the bottom upwards.

During his time in charge of Middlesbrough, he famously helped produce a complete team of homegrown players, all born within a 10-mile radius of the Riverside, winning the League Cup in 2004 and leading them to the 2006 UEFA Cup final, and would relish the opportunity to do something similar at Molineux.

Wolves are looking for the new man to be without a sizeable backroom staff and McClaren has worked alone in recent times.

But to choose McClaren, the Wolves board have to be bold enough to gamble on the former Boro boss’s reputation, which took a battering and infamously saw him branded ‘the wally with the brolly’ after he failed to guide England to the 2008 European Championships.

He has since repaired his standing as one of the most progressive and innovative coaches in the game after taking Dutch club FC Twente to their first Eredivisie championship in 2009-10.

After Twente, McClaren managed German side Vfl Wolfsburg from May 2010 to February 2011.

McClaren returned to Twente in January 2012 after a short spell as manager of Nottingham Forest.

As a coach, he led Derby into the top flight with Jim Smith then enjoyed huge success at Manchester United.

Steve McClaren factfile:

  • Player: 28 goals in 305 games as midfielder for Hull, Derby Lincoln, Bristol City and Oxford
  • Coach: Oxford, Derby, Manchester United, England
  • Manager: Middlesbrough, England, Twente, Wolfsburg, Nottingham Forest, Twente
  • Honours: As coach; Derby Second Division 1986-87; as assistant manager – Manchester United Premier League title – 1998-99, 1999-2000, 2000-01, FA Cup 1999, Champions League 1999, Intercontinental Cup 1999; As manager: Middlesbrough League Cup 2004, UEFA Cup final 2006, Twente: Eredivisie 2009-10.

PeteNuts

Okay, DON'T get Owen Coyle. DO get Steve McLaren. Imagine the message that would send out to the division. Imagine how enticing that would be to potential signings. A former England manager running the show. We'd be up by March.

Chris

If people can actually form their own opinion, then this would be an inspired appointment.

Assuming a good bunch of people on here only read headlines in The Sun, they'll be saying no.

StefanWolves

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO...OH, GO ON THEN

PeteNuts

(sings along) THERE'S NO LIMITS!

Cthulhu Wanderer

That should be our new entrance music. Better than Jeff Beck.

Whoever we get needs full backing from the board to start again, however brutal it may seem, Morgan needs to bite the bullet and do what's best for the club instead of sitting on his hands muttering about what's gone wrong

initowinit

I take that as a NO then

ThaiWolf

I don't read the sun, but, still.

No way should we employ Steve McLaren!

Owen Coyle for me.

lONDONWOLF

I don't read comics like the Sun either but appointing Steve McClaren would be a total disaster. Ditto Owen Coyle. We need new young blood, with fresh ideas. O'Neill wouldn't come to a Div 1 side, although he would be the sort of manager we need. Not really inspired by any of the names being banded about but Jackett or Di Matteo appear the best of a poor lot.

PeteNuts

"We need young blood, fresh ideas."

Why?

If you have a good reason, then that's fine, but it strikes me you're just saying a phrase because you like the sound of it.

LONDONWOLF

McClaren, Coyle etc have produced nothing here in England worth mentioning in recent years. McClaren talks well, sometimes even in pigeon english, but doesn't deliver and certainly is no motivator of players. Can't operate at all unless he has a big war-chest to spend. Coyle has zero man management skills, just bellows. Always seems devoid of a plan B if things are not going right. No we need someone without all the baggage that these has been's carry around. Someone with enthusiasm, energy, who has managed on a shoe-string and has got his players to perform above expectations.

Robbie Dennison's Curler

Sorry, but I can't agree. The guy's a walking disaster.

Coyle for me - we should snap him up while we've got the chance.

mr idiot

another has been , mite sell a lot ov umberellas though !! lol

paddy

if we want an ex england set up man lookingto rebulid ----

Peter Taylor

tactics and ability , who knows the lower leagues and players well

Leon

Need I say any More than Glen Hoddle and Graham Taylor, bother differing styles, both failures for us. McLaren has not done well in this country, he seems to do better abroad.

PeteNuts

He has won trophies in this country.

Kashyyyk

Trophies? I thought it was just the League Cup. It'd be interesting to see if he takes on the accent in press conferences, but no, get in Owen Coyle he's the man to rebuild us.

BOF

He will only come for the money! Wouldn't you given the short time you only have to spend at the Wolves.

A fail- win situation.

If you fail, it doh matter, the Wolves hierarchy will pay you off.

Wolves are a nice little earner for less than adequate managers wanting a golden sunset to their careers.

UTW Di Matteo

niwolf

no mistakes this time-give it to Coyler

Mr T

What you talkin bout FOOL!!

Coyle would be a massive, massive mistake.

Donchoo fools know anything about soccerball?!

blur

Coyle needs lots of his own people employed if he gets the job, this means the staff we have will have to leave.

Why not keep them, get a good coach and spend Coyles staff money on players.

Seems logical to me

Blur

Thehoffleftsock

That's it, appoint the wally with the brolly, it would fit it with our chuckle brother management. And fittingly he has the what it takes on paper,

Ex england manager, check

Useless in Germany, check

He may even speak with a yam yam twang now he's not Dutch anymore. I am sooooo fed up if this is true,

Paulthepunter

Just like the other 3 ex England managers did? Are you deluded or just a fan of negative tactics?

PeteNuts

Because, of course, all ex-England managers manage in exactly the same way, bring the exact same qualities with them and produce exactly the same results.

mr idiot

thought april the 1st had past .

magic wanderer

The guy has failed at his last 4 jobs and with England. We have enough serial losers at this club we don't need another one. A definiate no no, hope it doesn't happen. UTW.

BEOWULF

Lets face facts, whoever takes the job will be a loser, the last manager who was of real quality at the Wolves was Stan Cullis and we sacked him!

How many top managers have we had since then, don't say Mick because he could not cut it in the top division.

Bill McGarry and John Barnwell were the only others who won anything decent.

English Exile

Going for a hat-trick are you PeteNuts??

Graham Taylor

Glenn Hoddle

and now the brolly man....

Mills wolf

simply put......

good pedigree with a point to prove, just like Wolves.

GO GET HIM MORGAN !!! THEN BACK HIM !!!

Wally with the brolly

Genius... It gets better!!!!

Ask Forest fans what they think of him.

Wolves01

This post is correct! Forest fans know how shocking he is!

steve roberts

You my friend have no football knowledge

Graham Taylor and Glenn Hoddle failed to make an impression. And these guys had a good England Managerial career.

Steve coudn't run a bath he's useless

PeteNuts

Because, of course, all ex-England managers manage in exactly the same way, bring the exact same qualities with them and produce exactly the same results. Sorry to keep repeating myself like this, but you all need to get over this "HE WAS AN ENGLAND MANAGER. WE HAD ENGLAND MANAGERS BEFORE AND THEY DONE BAD, THEREFORE ALL ENGLAND MANAGERS WILL DO BAD FOR US" thing you're on. We're in League One now. Recalibrate expectations accordingly.

tom sandbach

"Graham Taylor had a good England managerial career"? I must have missed that!

All you've proven with that comment is that you have no idea.

Pete's boss

Your ash tray for a motor bike invention has failed and has cost the company lots of money. Your a disgrace and your fired.

PeteNuts

YOU'RE a disgrace and... Oh, what's the point?

reidmail

Spot on, if you can't spell, we will judge you.

BOF

I assume he will cultivate a black country accent to communicate correctly ( I believe he changed the way he spoke when he was at Twente?) to the fans.

Just say NO but yes to di Matteo

UTW

Lea Rd Wolf

We could get Ferguson with Mourinho as No2, makes no odds, we are still going down next season

Sheffield wolf

somehow our dancing with ex England managers smacks of our arrogance . Hoddle was a disaster and as much as I like GT, I watched his last game and he looked lost. Coyle, please

soggy_wolf

Did you think the same thing about Glenn Hoddle?

PeteNuts

No. Happy to help.

Mensa Wolves

I'm glad we are still looked upon as a viable option for out-of-work managers who want to rehabilitate their reputation... but will they still be so keen once they've spoken to Morgan and Moxey?

I have a feeling that Morgan's ego is so battered that he will hope to regain a semblance of it by implementing this head coach strategy, which they obviously think is so clever.

Otherwise he is admitting that he knows nothing about football. Which is obvious to us, but too painful for him to admit.

My preference is Coyle for the style of football and his development of players.

McClaren may be OK too despite the fact he is a clown. He'll be speaking yam yam in two weeks...

Who next to offer their services? Kevin Keegan?

tipton wolf

Be honest would you really be excited if he got the job?

How many clowns do we want at our club !!!

madaboutwolves

what about steve bull lets make real history and hit the bottom again.....mclaren is a waste of time he wants big money were bully will do it for nowt....

And dont forget half of you lot listen to all these has beens making comments about wolves so give bully a chance and we could make real history......

Let me know what you all think

larvian wolf

But for obvious reasons Di Matteo isn't interested.

3rd tier. Nuff said.

Distant wolf

Good point. You can't remember Hoddle then?

ACoxsell

What is it with Wolves and x International managers!!! Graham Taylor....Glenn Hoddle.......McCarthy and now McClaren. The next thing you.ll be saying is that Poxey has called Sven to see if he's interested. If you can afford him. At least McClaren has got the knack of picking up the local lingo......bostin!!!!!!!!!!

gold n black adder

with a lot of wolves fans suggesting youth the premium option for next year lets ask the ismails, the batths, davis etc if they would like to learn under a coyle or a mcclaren for a year or two...

Floyd BRUNO Streete

Fantastic if Wolves can get him.

Noisy

Appoint an ex-England manager - what could go wrong? Coyle please!

fletch one

Bring back Glen Hoddle

sussexwolf

I'll pass, pass, pass and pass again on that one. pretty football with no end product

Give it 110%

"Pretty football with no end product". As opposed to ugly pointless hoof ball with no end product, which has been our more recent speciality

Can't we learn anything from Wigan or Swansea? Set the system in place ie play football properly and the success will follow. Or hoof it and "get in amongst them"

Would rather be Wigan than stoke any day.

Roy 1937

I was a staunch supporter of Wolves from 1947, I was a fanatic up until 1981, that is when we went down from the old First Division, we were absolute crap and it was breaking my heart watching them, my mates could not believe it when I finished going. I could see the light then and just after we went down to the Forth Div.

About Glen Hoddle, it was no surprise to me when he walked out of the club, because that is the kind of person he is. The best manager we have had since, was Davy Jones. There was a lot of dead wood in the team then, and he cleared them all out and we had a decent team, couldn't understand why he was sacked. Forever Wolves, but I will not come back.

bobwolf101

I was walking down from the top of Snowdon when Wolves were playing in the play-off final with David Jones in charge. My sister was texting me the score :)

He is the kind of clear out manager Wolves now need.

chris h

Noisy, Third time lucky maybe.Taylor got us to the play offs and if they had stayed with him he would have got us to the Prem and kept us there. No one seems to have a good word for Hoddle, but we did better under him than we did last season. Last game for Hoddle we beat Norwich away,a lot better than the last game under Saunders at Brighton. I hope they pick the best man for the job. McClaren did a good job at Middlesborough.

Noisy

Sorry Chris, I was just being flippant. I don't think McClaren would be a bad choice. He does some odd things at times, but don't we all! He has had successes and failures like almost all managers but I am impressed that he would even try and rebuild a career from League 1. My preference for Coyle is that I feel he is more likely to stand up to the owner and your pal, but if this is true it probably guarantees that he won't get the job!

There is the danger of people opposing a less than ideal choice being used as an excuse for an awful one in the Bruce - Connor style.

I did always like Taylor and it broke all our hearts that night at Burnden Park. Hoddle never really committed to the job and blaming the pitch week after week was embarrassing.

Diamond Lights

Personally I enjoyed the team under Hoddle. I know that's almost sacreligous around here but there it is. Yeah they drew too many games but you know what, they never got relegated.

The thing about Taylor and Hoddle is - hey presto - no relegations on the CV. The same is true for Steve McLaren.

That's a contrast to dean Saunders, terry Connor, and even saint Mick. Maybe to mr Coyle too,

Give it a go. UEFA cup finalists, national team, being able to drop players who think they've a right to play forever. Sounds ok to me....

Or I'm a Dutchman as Schteeve would shay.

wembley 74

Good point Chris. He's experienced at home and in Europe and don't forget was good enough for Sir Alex as trusted No.2 at Old Trafford. He's also won more trophies than Moyes & Hodgson between them and they have the 2 biggest jobs in football! Reality check!! In the 3rd Division we ain't going to attract too many big names are we? Only the usual bunch of has beens, the sacked & the no hoper journeymen. He's a proper footballing man with a good CV and if he's prepared to take on the challenge why not? We have, and could, do a lot worse.

NTWolf

Totally agree, Ferguson rated him highly and he does know a thing or too about football! Mclaren for me

Graham Taylor was an ex England Manager when he came to us and he should never have left when he did.

Colin Fream

You are right - should have gone 6 months earlier

I see the keyboard warriors are out in force again. I wonder how many of these antis are the same idiots who put Morgan off bringing in Bruce? It's between Coyle & Mclaren so far for me.

So, getting an ex-England manager is "doing it on the cheap again"?

It wouldn't happen with Bonser he never listens to supporters likewise Peace at the Baggies they are both single minded and stick to their guns. Its time Morgan grew a pair and made his own decisions UTS

The Voice of Reason

The most outstanding candidate. He'll do.

Decca

still Mr Coyle please, even though the comment about the backroom staff, has now crept in, which seemingly removes Owen Coyle.

We keep talking about a clean brush, and that has to include backroom staff as well, as we need to start with energetic football from our kids, as the pace will be completly different.

Also, with our existing players stating their desire to stay, no thanks, your loosing metality and "just rock up and play" mentality has got rid of a range of coaches. Time to move on lads.

Please keep Sigurdson and Sako, at least untill Xmas if the bank allows, and the crop of kids at the club, plus a couple of fresh faces

Why not ? Your forgetting we're in league 1 !! I'd appoint him now. Forget his time with forest, they're still having problems behind the scenes. Great choice

Wulvzs

We are already a dumping ground for ex-England managers

WHY NOT HAVE ANOTHER ONE!

John De Wolf

Not my first choice but not a bad option. Has experience and a proven track record.

At 46 Owen Coyle would be my first choice, a young but experienced manager with something to prove.

Failing that, I think Darren Ferguson is a good option. Got teams from League 1 promoted before and will be able to work with a bigger transfer budget.

Darren F

But Darren F has also got championship teams relegated. On that basis he's at the Saunders level, and we don't wanna do that again in a hurry

Seriously though, Whoever gets the nod needs at least a year in the post without getting the chop. We need a plan, a manager to deliver it and the time to make it work.

I like the idea of a bigger transfer budget. Roll on the big summer spend!

Jersey mick

He would work well with younger players

Surely all his experience would benefit our club

Forget all this brolly nonsence

Start again and get pride back

Codsall Wolf (the real one)

They have lost the plot yet again if they even consider this idiot.

We are already the laughing stock of football given our recent track record, this will just compound the image.

I believe this Kevin Thelwell's previous footballing club was high-flying Wrexham, hence the Dean Saunders apt, blind leading the blind springs to mind.

Given our history can't the club seek advice from of our own footballing greats?

Take out the disastrous tenure for England and this mans cv is very good we all thought he would succeed Fergie at MU at one time so it is interesting his name has been mentioned he could be the way forward Wolves fans must remember only Alf Ramsay has succeeded for England another plus with McLaren is he can bring the academy players through lets hope he is interested more of a success than Jackett and co. Happy summer hols to Wolves fans everywhere

NOooooooooooooooooooooo!

Di Matteo or Coyle

baggiedan

The last thing Di Matteo did was win the champions league, if you think he will go to wolves you are off your rocker mate.

Takk

Ha ha ha - everytime I see Di Matteo's name mentioned on these pages.

Champions League and FA Cup winner who doesn't need the money coming to a 3rd tier club in crisis?

Right - that's really going to happen. Dream on.

BrummieRobWolves

He has been out of work for a while and not exactly been inundated with job offers though? Furthermore, he lives in Leamington Spa. Wolves is still a prized job and that is why an ex England manager and Coyle are interested. Di Matteo, however, is unlikely - as at Chelsea he did not exactly play attractive football!

.???

Chelsea weren't playing attractive football? Maybe I'm missing the irony but weren't they streaking away with the Prem for the first 8-10 games of the season? Whatever happened meant that they threw it away, which I think is probably the real story of 2012-13

Remind me when one of Saint Mick's teams won the champions league?

Crunge

McCarthy could have won the Champions League and FACup with that group of players.

All Di Matteo had to do was keep squirting the WD40

Who`s come in for him since he left?

Takk

You don't get it do you - he doesn't NEED to work again. He has a successful business outside of football which is bringing in the cash. He also has substantial payoffs from WBA and (more lucratively) Chelsea. He certainly doesn't need Wolves' money, so there isn't any enticement there.

He has a CV that is pretty much second to none - no matter how he achieved that.

It's not a case of who'se come in for him - it's a case of him picking and choosing where he goes to when HE wants to do it.

He can speak fluently 4 languages. He doesn't even have to stick in the UK, never mind in the Midlands, when HE finally decides the time is right for him to return to management - if he ever does, that is.

The Europe-wide summer managerial merry-go-round is just starting. There will be offers to his agent from Champions League and Europa League clubs in Germany, Switzerland, France, Belgium or Italy.

So - bearing all that in mind - remind me again why he would want to have managing a club in total disarray in the 3rd tier of English football on his CV?

BOF

Di Matteo would get all parties invigorated for the challenge.

Do we really want some unappealing person named (put your own preference here, SB, SM) who will be got rid of after half a season for failure.

M and M, go for someone with some style at least it would make the season more bearable.

UTW

bricks and mortar

Taylor, Hoddle and now McClaren - No thanks would rarther have Coyle

ay-it

what does McClaren know about Lower League Football eh?

staffordshire sam

look, he played at Lincoln City, Bristol City, and Oxford United. Forest were cruising to Div 2 so he has plenty of experience of lower leagues.

Bob

A brave appointment but potentially brilliant provided we can appease the same loonies who didnt want Steve Bruce. Watch them go into meltdown.

The Flying Winger

I Hope not!!!!!

Do we want to become a bigger joke of a club than we are already?

Still no smoke from the Mol yet only a black cloud, thunder & lightning to follow

Remind me how Man U conducted their appointment, there again they are a proper club.

Remember those days?

PeteNuts

Seriously now. Why would the appointment of Steve McLaren, Eredivisie winner, League Cup winner, Alex Ferguson protégé and former England manager, be a bad thing? I'm intrigued to know your opinion.

The Flying Winger

Hi PeteNuts,

yes he has done the things you quote, but he hasn't done anything in the last few years in the English League.

I don't know what happened at Forest, but not good for him and I just think we don't want another chancer

Saunders was supposed to be a good coach, what a disaster he was.

I accept that any appointment will be difficult and we will probably appoint someone from the Managerial Merry Go Round, but do we really need the Wally with the Brolly at this time in our history.

I think not.

Bob

Hasnt done anything in the English Leagues, cos he was winning the league with Twente! Get him in.

Noisy

In fairness, comparing McLaren to Saunders is a bit extreme!

PeteNuts

He hasn't done anything in the English League in the last few years because he was, for the most part, managing at the top level in Holland and Germany.

What happened at Forest was, by all accounts, a lack of backing from a cash-strapped board, which one presumes will not be the case here. And what an Earth does "another chancer" even mean? In what way is he a chancer?

And I don't think there were too many of us who supposed Dean Saunders was a good coach at all, I think we were all opposed to him pretty much from the start, his appointment being a poor one.

Your objections just don't stand up to scrutiny. He'd be an excellent appointment for the level we are, the managerial equivalent of a marquee signing.

Grace

I heard about this over the weekend & I had the same reservations as you, then I thought about it.

My understanding is that he left Forest for the same reasons as McCarthy not taking it, the chairman basically trying to pick the team.

Remember we are now a third division team & with all of the recent termoil at the club & the fact that we are still a big club, I think his experience would be valuable to say the least & at this level & at Championship level, McClaren would command an awful lot of respect, including from within the club, something that I don't think has been there since McCarthy left.

I think if this deal is on the table it should be done ASAP.

If not then then best of the rest by a mile is Coyle, as I don't believe Di Matteo is interested (he'd be my first choice).

Jackett - No

Davis - No

Robinson - No

Smith - No

None of the above have ever done anything credible in the game, if we are going to change the culture at the club then the next appointment needs to be for the longer term, with a strong respected figure at the helm & McClaren could just be the man.

Read a really interesting article yesterday on 'Wolvesblog' that goes into why we should be a major force in this divison, well worth a read & actually cheered me up!!!!

Also Moxey still has to go, how he is still here is beyond me!!!

#moxeyout

IanTheLichfieldWolf

It does sound impressive when you put it like that. However, the thing is most of those achievements were a few years ago now, Pete. What has he achieved in English football lately? And this is the kicking fields of League One were going into.

I credit him for wanting to take it on in League One, but worry about his last spell in English football at Forest and how little time he would be given because of his undoubted image problem (brollies, bizarrely accented interviews etc..) . It's possibly not fair...but it is what it is unfortunately.

Chillo Wolf

Couldn't agree more Pete

The Flying Winger - fool

tipton wolf

Lots of jobs going lately Pete but nobody goes for him

McClaren's Buggy

Ok so that's impressive for top flight football but what's his experience of building squads from scratch in the third tier with limited resources and changing the culture of a club?

PeteNuts

So you're SPECIFICALLY looking for someone who has experience relevant to Wolves' current situation?

I hate to break it to you, Buggy, but that man ain't out there.

Takk

Ah - Buggy - that's exactly what Dean Saunders did at Doncaster. And look where they are now too.

So, by your reckoning, Saunders ticks all of the boxes and is most definately Wolves' man then.

Go get him Moxley.

Sir Billy Quiet

Remind me who was Alex Ferguson's assistant when they won the European Cup?

Niner

Should be great at rebuilding a team virtually from scratch in the lower leagues then, after all it's only a mere 30 years or so since he was playing there.

Balham Wolf

Petenuts, I thought your original comment was tongue in cheek, but I may have been mistaken. The question is this, given a choice between Coyle and the Brolly man who would you pick? Surely it is Coyle.

PeteNuts

I'll be honest, either would be great but I would err towards McLaren, simply for the cachet he still has within the game and the quality of signing he could attract.

wol1877ves

bang on again pete he's bound to know some good up and coming dutch talent worth a punt in league 1,and we all know the dutch like to play football and not hoofball so could be worth a go,,,,,,,/\/\wwfc/\/\,,,,,,,

Mensa Wolves

Neither McClaren nor Coyle have spoken to Morgan/Moxey/Threlfell yet.

They'll both pull their hats out of the ring quicker than Sticky Vicky fires ping pong balls.

BeckenhamWolf

I wouldn't be adverse to his appointment, great pedigree..

My main concern is this whole 'he wouldn't come with backroom staff', why are we seeking a lone soldier, every one needs support in their role..

IanTheLichfieldWolf

Morgan and Moxey are seeking someone who won't bring many backroom staff with him because, as ever, it's all about doing things on the cheap with no regard to the long term benefits of taking a different more progressive approach.

Which is kind of why we are where we are.....

And why we will end up with McLaren or Jackett instead of someone like Owen Coyle.

"Why are we seeking a lone soldier?".

ANSWER - Because Moxey wont pay compensation to the existing backroom staff to enable any new man to bring his own people.

gold n black adder

with the pedigree of mcclaren maybe he wouldn't be a lone soldier... maybe he would get the backing of morgan...

Georgie Best was a Wolves fan too. You will find that a lot of people that were born in the late 40's or early 50's had a fondness for Wolves, as they were brought up with the televised games - when Wolves were the best club in England. Likewise, Alex Ferguson has a soft spot for Wolves!

I suppose any appointment is a gamble but surely we need someone who is experienced at getting teams promoted. Many candidates being mentioned appear to less than successful.

Difference is that Bruce is not known as the wally with the brolly. he has seen himself lose his job at forest, Twenty and Wolfsburg not to mention the fact that he failed to get a reasonable England team into the Euros. Maybe wrong about Bruce, doesnt make you right about McClaren!

Michel de Notredame

Not sure that Steve McClaren is a better bet than Owen Coyle but either one of them is a lot better than the recent rubbish that managed Wolves.

On a positive note I notice that Mad Mick wants to buy Henry, Doyle and Ward. I'll drive them across to Ipswich myself and even buy Mick a pint as a thank you. He can even have two or three more thrown in for free just to get the rubbish off the wage bill. Oh I almost forgot Poxey is included.

Why not? He is a damn good coach and we need a total re-think and clearout. I would be happy with him . He would have extensive European contacts and massive experience. I also like Ray Wilkins

I must be missing something here. The way some people are going on you would think it was Mourinho lol

Luckily we have Jez Moxey who we know we can trust to make the right decision. :)

simon

not bad a middlesborough??? - took them to the europa cup final and never in the relagation zone in the premiership. Not great eh just good.

You Sir, Are A Fool

Not great at middlesborough!!

How can a manager who won the league cup, got middlesborough to the uefa cup final and their highest premier league position of 7th be considered unsuccessful?

If it wasn't for the england debacle (A poisoned chacile of job) then he would still of being considered one of the best up and coming english managers.

It obviously clear that you desperadoWolf know about as much about football as i do about opera.

I personally believe that as a league 1 side if you can attract managers of the calibre of McClaren and Coyle then the future will be bright for you!!

Mystic Meg's Review of 2014/2015 season

I’ve had a look into my crystal ball and I predict Wolves will be the first team in history to suffer four straight relegations as they drop into the Conference on the last day of the season. I can see it now, Captain-for-life Karl Henry saying: ‘The players are gutted. We have to take responsibility, we haven’t been good enough for a while. League Two is a tough league, but we have to take the positives from a very disappointing season and look forward to the Blue Square Bet Premier League. I knew we’d be back in the Premier League soon. At least players are men in the Conference and won’t go down like dying swans when I tackle ‘em, unlike the prima donnas in League Two. With eight managers in three years the players have been let down. Our system does work, just look at Mick McCarthy at Ipswich, he’s taken them into 6th place in the PL and Europe next season, playing the Wolves way. I know the fans are struggling, but only 983 turned up for our last home match against Morecambe. The players are struggling too, me, Roger ‘n Jamie haven’t had a pay rise in four years, as we’re still on the old Premier league contracts. What about inflation? It cost Roger 300 quid to fill his Bentley last week and he’s had to cut back on nights out. I bet our fans have had pay rises’.

tikle takle

i've also had a look in to my crystal ball, and for the 2013/14 season i see newly promoted cardiff beat wba 4-0 with one game left and wba become the first team in the history of sandwell town finish 8th , twice ,

Lakeside

Thank you, cheered up my Monday no end. Of course, some half-witted wally out there will fail to understand your humour but it has a ring of truth about it. Nice one.

You have unfortunately missed out the obligatory comments from such legends as Rachel Heyhoe Flint, The Mayor of Wolvo and Steve Bull, all of whom are wheeled out at times of empty columns and other crises. "We need stability", " the players have to take a close look at themselves", " this is a disaster for our charity shop economy" etc etc .

All we need now is Moxey to join the ranting unhinged loonies in Dudley Street and try to get us to buy tickets. Ha Ha.

linconwolf

HA HA! Great post, cheered me up no end!

My crystal ball tells a similar story however 10 years in the future Karl Henry, with a grey beard, still captain, rejoiced,' We have now managed to stabilise the club in a respectable 17th position in the Northern Premier League Divison One South! After 9 successive relegations we truly believe that we are on the up. I think I deserve a second testimonial to subsidise my wages as I haven't had a pay rise and I'm struggling to make ends meet on £30,000 a week. Poor old Jamie has had to give up his holiday home in Barbados and we dont think we are being treated fairly after this seasons success in stabilising the club a major force in non league football! I truly hope the fans see our side and help us achieve a well deserved pay rise. I feel proud that this seasons average gate is 246 and feel that I deserve a cut of the revenue this brings in. I feel I am the man to lead Wolves for another decade, at the age of 46 I beleive I'm as fit as ever and I look forward to another 10 years as captain of Wolves.' Henry then leaves the press conference, walking sideways, quickly followed by 14 crabs chewing on raw bacon!

Here's hoping they will get someone who can unite the club and fans.

Well said Sir Billy. We are NOT a big club in current footballing terms. McClaren has experience with the biggest club in British football (United) and the national team. He has also been successful abroad.

What exactly do you naysayers want? He would be hungry to prove himself in British football again and has the strength of personality to sweep away the playing detritus we have endured for far too long.

Coyle for me

Sir Billy Quiet

I am going to keep repeating myself until Moxey has gone.

Forget the talk about new managers and players the 'elephant in the room' is Jerz Moxey - why are the Express and Star ignoring this issue?

Moxey must go - his failings are obvious to all - no matter how good a football administrator he may have been, he has now overseen the collapse of the 'footballing side' of the club and has overseen the biggest decline in revenue in the history of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

He is the CEO but the E&S won't address the issue by asking why he is still there? - we are all quick to call for managers to be sacked why the reluctance to raise this issue?

If the E&S post this - fair play!

JUDAS

Sir Billy Quiet

I have never liked Moxey but I have supported him whilst he was doing a good job but he has now overseen 2 years of abject failure.

In any other club or job he would have been sacked.

Sometimes in life there is no alternative but to start afresh - this is the time at Wolves.

Moxey out.

Balham Wolf

Could not agree with you more, I just don't think Morgan has the nerve to send him packing. John Richards was sadly not up to the task, but what we need is a change and I am sure we can find someone who knows how to run not only a successful football club but knows when its time to move players on and when its time to put ones hand in ones pocket and buy quality players to move the club forward. Moxey has failed on this account badly and its time for someone new to have a go.

Morgan you are in control so do the honorable thing and get rid of Moxey.

Fact

I usually have an issue with your comments , but this post is SPOT ON , why is there no coverage or comment in reference to an individual who has completely failed his position - MR MOXEY , he has to go , EVERYONE can see it so why no E&S coverage on this obvious situation !!!!! ? .

Ps - has to be Owen Coyle for me .

Lakeside

Have to agree with you SBQ. But there is more to this debacle than Moxey. Why did WWFC start their last PL season under McCarthy well and then see their form plummet? As I have said before, I heard some rather disturbing gossip regarding players and their betting habits.

Something must have happened but it has never been addressed. I repeat, what happened to cause that sudden drop in form which was never ever recovered and put WWFC where they are today?

EMMA DALE

I dont know what you have against him,not his fault the players under performed, not his fault the rubbish mccarthy wanted, he backed him to the hilt with the players he wanted,we bought fletcher from burnley was it 6 million, never seen the albion spend that much on div 1 player, managed to make about 14million proffit on jarvis and fletcher that should keep us out of finacial trouble for these dark years to come,

so you please explain to me why its his fault that the players are crap,if he said no to o,hara and johnson signing you would probably be the first one to shout Moxey wont let the manager buy the players he wantsso either way he could never win,so we did not buy in january for saunders,do you know anyone who wanted to come to wolves, i dont anyway we all have a right to speak our minds, but i think if you got your wish who do you want to bring in.

Sir Billy Quiet

Its simple we were Premiership and now we are now 3rd tier.

Jez Moxey is the CEO responsible for running all aspects of the club - including appointing/sacking managers.

Why has he not taken his share of responsibility?

£0.5M a year plus bonus? he can't hide any longer.

Is he responsible or not?

EMMA DALE

No he is not responsible,Morgan hired and fired Moxey has to do what he is told, £0.5 bonus thats peanuts to a man who bought in £16M bankers get twice that much for failing,We need Moxey now more than ever if not we will end up like coventry and portsmouth,we ars now paying the price for mccarthys players we got em no one else wants them.

chris h

Emma, I have been saying for years on here, long before Sir Billy, Jez Moxey has been the main reason for our initial underachievement ,given Sir Jacks millions he has put in,and now our downfall,(this is despite money also put in by Steve Morgan}.He is Chief Executive and one of only 4 Board members. He has been at the club for 13 years,he has been paid a handsome salary,up to four times greater than counterparts at Villa and Blues for starters. According to Martin Swain he has undertaken Director of Football responsibilities. The link between the owner and team manager. With all the extra millions put in by our owners, under Jez Moxey's stewardship, we have still underperformed compared with our neighbours. We are relegated to the third division, same happened when Jez was at Stoke,Do you really think this is a coincidence? Surely he should be held accountable ? If not all you will achieve is ongoing underperformance or more failure.Jez Moxey has many qualities, but his ability to judge the worth and ability of respective footballers is sadly flawed. And given his responsibilities that will always result in failure.

Ralphdowg

Lots of cyber warriors moaning again. Didn't want Steve Bruce either, did you chaps? D'oh.

We should be grateful that people with such pedigree in the game still want to come to our club. I'll back whoever we get as Head Coach.

They will never please everyone so they may as well just get on with it. If you are unhappy with whoever we choose and are going to continue to spread negativity, and be itching to use the "told you so" phrase at the first opportunity, then please just stay away.

I'll be happy with a League Cup final, UEFA Cup final and promotion to the Premier League - I'll even buy him an umbrella.

Let's ask one of the best managers of all time what he thinks of Steve McClaren, I'm willing to go with what he says - whether yes or no. Over to you Fergie.

slama01902

At last someone talking sense

I was all for Bruce /\_/\

Baldy Bouncer

Finally.

A comment worth reading. Personally, I'd be amazed if McClaren would even consider coaching (or managing) in the third tier of English football so if the article is to be believed lets get him in sharpish so he can have a couple of months flogging (or more than likely giving them away) the deadwood to Ipswich and assembling some kind of young team to begin the fightback.

Timmiswolf

3rd time lucky as far as Wolves and ex-England managers go?

Probably wouldn't be the worst appointment in the world - especially if he could replicate what he did at Boro.

Smudgewolf

No thanks, we're already a joke fo a club

Taswolf

Not the club that's a joke, more like the so called expert fans.

stourwolf

The club have to have a proper selection process here with the new man telling the club what he is going to bring The Wolves Way hasnt worked and cannot be continued unless we want to end up in the Blue Square - The backroom staff has to be appropriate to the task in hand and the new man must be allowed to have what he considers to be the tools for the job within reason.

We are a failing club and the turn around process wont be easy at all - any candidate is almost certain to have been sacked at some time so we cant hold that against em but their experience is goiung to be vital _ so no more Terry Connor novices PLEASE.

I fear Moxey driving the process and we all know (Steve Morgan excepted) that what he knows about football (apart from balance sheets) could be written on the head of a pin!!! His track record is dire at finding the right man for the job and actually he is the man that should be at the job centre. See the Mel Eves Column in the Mercury!!!!!!!!

HumbersideWolf

Totally agree with your comments about the selection process as I posted recently. Make the appointment in a professional manner, decide on the criteria, shortlist those available and willing to commit themselves to the club, then interview the candidates giving them the opportunity to outline their approach. The board has to outline what Wolves can offer, enabling candidates to withdraw at this point, and then select the best candidate based on the interview. I would also agree that experience and a proven track record should be essential criteria and fans must accept that most experienced managers have also failed at some point in their careers.

Does it matter who the next gaffer is. The fans wish list is never listend 2. The 2 m's will do what suits them, not the club. Whoever the next gaffer is we MUST stand by him. Look at whats been said about david moyes this week. Started slow at everton. Done really well on a shoe string which is what our new gaffer must do. But the most important thing is the board and fans stood by him even when things were goin bad. We are the greatest fans in football. But we gotta stand by the new boss if we gona climb back outa league 1 and head 4 the prem. WTID

The Besmirched Rapscallion

We've all undoubtedly got our faves for the job, but how many of us can say we've done our homework on them. Morgan has fell at this hurdle more than once and we simply cannot afford to pluck a random name out the hat this time. I was happy when Coyles name was mentioned and thought he was the perfect choice, that was until I backtracked on the net and had a read of some Bolton blogs. Fans, ex-players and the board all seemed very glad to see the back of him, his training methods were , in total, a small sided game followed by a team talk , he was always reluctant to use subs and tactically naive. Coyles obviously got many positives, but after reading a few more articles the overwhelming conclusion is that Dougie Freedman is light years ahead and getting the max from each player. It appears that Mc'Claren is now in the frame, we can all shout yes or no on this thread, but how many of us can choose a manager with a guarantee , I never thought I'd say this, but we gotta put our trust in the club to do the relevant homework, Morgan has given the job to Thelwell and we must hope he comes up trumps, but we can't disregard McClaren cos of the England thing or cos his name starts with another Mc'. None of us know his links, his methods or potential diamonds we could pick up from abroad, we just get a vibe and react to it. I expect there'll be a few who disagree with this post, but I just wanna get across that the odds must be in our favour the next time we gamble, Thelwell has no choice but play the best hand possible. For once we gotta trust Wolves to do the right thing....

Molly Knew Mick

Excellent comment and I completely agree!

All we're compiling at the moment is a short list and it is inconceivable that McClaren wouldn't be on that given his record and profile.

That doesn't mean he'll get the job but presumably - like all recruitment processes - your CV gets you the interview but then you all start level. If they're clear about what they want ( and please God they are this time) then with a properly conducted interview they should get the right man!

That doesn't guarantee success, of course, but at least unlike the last 3 appointments, the process is designed to achieve the right outcome!

The Besmirched Rapscallion

No stone can lie unturned this time Mick, thorough research and fact-finding must be the order of the day, not just this time either, every time we need a new member of the coaching staff or playing squad. I can see the coming season goin one of two ways, we get it wrong and all hope will disappear, low attendances watchin poor quality, get it right and people will watch a winning side no matter what the league is. It's a great opportunity to start afresh, we must be ultimate proffesionals in everything we do and slowly get the snowball rolling until the good times come back. We got finance, support, facilities and massive potential, we just need that one man to bond it all together and shake some life into the whole clubs under-performers. I'm confident we can get it right this time. Keep the faith..

3rd Tear Wolf

Well this one's dividing opinion!

For me I'd get Coyle but I don't think McClaren would be a bad option.

The board though need to get the fans back on side and the majority of fans are in favour of appointing Coyle so this would seem the obvious choice

Oakwood Wolf

Agree absolutely. I'd go for Coyle if his backroom demands were affordable but Steve Maclaren comes with a lot of experience and we should be grateful that someone of his calibre is interested. Coyle, as the popular choice, would sell more season tickets and improve turnover. Both would get us back up and both are infinitely preferable to the other names being mentioned.

Warsaw Wolf

I know the ownership listened to the fans when we said we did not want Steve Bruce for which we were wrong, however, please, please, please Morgan, Moxey and Thelwell, please listen to us now. Steve McClaren is not a manager with experience in League One. He will not take us up one division, let alone two. I know we may not have the options of managers we may desire, but Kenny Jackett, Owen Coyle, Sean O'Driscoll, Ray Wilkinson? All these managers would be much preferable options.

Noisy

This is constantly pedalled about but how do you know that the club listened to the fans? They certainly haven't listened to the fans about anything else. I still suspect that the opinion of some fans was used as an excuse to take the easy and cheap option.

Timmiswolf

1. Who is the 'us' that you're referring to? A large proportion of comments on here view a McClaren appointment in a favourable light.

2. How do you know that he couldn't get us promoted?

3. Who the hell is Ray Wilkinson?

Padraig

" Ray Wilkinson" any day of the week for me! Is he one of the "Wilkinsons" that run the shops?

Warsaw Wolf

Sorry, my bad. wrote Ray Wilkinson when I was a little tired. meant Way Wilkins. I was also a little presumptuous when i said i was talking for the fans sorry.

But, maybe a large portion of the fans want him, but a large portion do not, and I am fed up with people comparing him to the Steve Bruce situation. Steve Bruce has a completely different record. Managed a number of different teams in which have been ok with him in charge and so we were too critical. McClaren on the other hand as a manager has only been successful with Middlesbrough. He has resigned with a disastrous record with his second spell at Twente and Forest. Was sacked by Wolfsburg and did a poor job with England.

Southern Wolf

Not to me they wouldn't so please don't speak on behalf of all fans. Owen Coyle is the only one that is preferable our of those you've mentioned, though I will be honest, never heard of Ray Wilkinson so he may be awesome. Kenny Jacket and Sean O'Driscoll both have track records of promotion from League One but neither have made a dent in success in The Championship.

Sean O'Driscoll had more trouble at Forest than McLaren had but McLaren has a track record of success in The Championship, Premier League and experience of the International scene along with experience of European Football . Ray WILKINS track record as a manager is terrible. He got fired at Fulham after 3 games and took QPR down in his first full-season in charge. Ok that was a long time ago and I'm sure his experience and knowledge will have changed but to suggest he's a better option than McLaren - to suggest any of the above other than Coyle represent a better option than McLaren does not represent the opinion of all fans.

Ryan

When McClaren was at Twente he won the league and he received plaudits for his attacking style of play from Johan Cruyff, no less.

He was assistant at Man Utd when they won the treble in 1999.

He won the League Cup at 'Boro - still their only trophy.

If he wants the job, I'd give him a chance. Any day of the week.

Surely not, "Springsteen" has never managed in this division!

Lakeside

In the absence of urgent applications from Mourinho, Pellegrini and Guardiola to manage a declining provincial club may I suggest Kevin Costner with Pan's People as backroom staff- Dances with Wolves.

Finchy

His last name starts with 'M' so the 3 M's are back! This is all Moxey is looking for in a manager.....

I want Coyle!!! he's a very very distant second in my opinion.

t23

an excellent choice. good tactician, good at bringing on young players, excellent range of experience.

owen coyle - no chance. has anybody actually bothered looking at his stats while he was at bolton. this idea of him playing and encouraging good football is nonsense. complete long ball team and his win ratio was what|?

mclaren would be a good long term appt which is exactly what we need now, and his experience of being an ex england manager and doing well abroad will give him enough clout to control the dressing room and make big enough decisions to get rid of some of our dross over paid prima donnas and be willing to replace them with the kids when needed.

Pete

Your out of your tree., Maclaren.... and how much do you think you would have to pay him.

He's not going to be happy with a league one pay packet.

And do really think an ex - england manager wants to be seen in league one!

With him at the helm it would be league two with a season, the guy is a waste of time.

Warsaw Wolf

Doing well abroad? he was sacked by Wolfsburg, quit FC Twente after fans and the media protested against him and he could not get a reasonable England team to qualify for the Euros. What part of that is doing well?

OK he did well with Middlesborough but that was many years ago and he quit his job at Nottigham Forest following only 8 points in the first ten games. This is a very poor record. This manager is not even a average manager. there are so many better than him. He will not sort out the dressing room. Poor choice.

Agree with your view on Owen Coyle though.

Dutch Wolf

During his time in charge of Middlesbrough, he famously helped produce a complete team of homegrown players, all born within a 10-mile radius of the Riverside, winning the League Cup in 2004 and leading them to the 2006 UEFA Cup final,

Now, when did we do something similar? 1972, 1974, 1980.

Moxey's Secret Fridge

The best name so far.. He plays the right football, he'll be an excellent coach, and he done wonders for Boro and FC Twente.. The Dutch play stunning football and that is what the Wolves need.. Get him in with a decent assistant like Alex Rae.

BrummieRobWolves

At the end of the day, whoever we appoint someone is bound to moan? In my opinion someone like McLaren is not a bad call - he certainly repaired his reputation in Holland! Equally Coyle or Jackett have baggage but we will not have an endless list of ideal candidates - as with Laurel & Hardy at the helm - it is a poisoned challice. It is still a big job but with a troubled dressing room headed by our ex skipper, a tough job for someone.

Og the dog

Forget England,experience-wise at club level he's as good as anybody. Even if we got Mourinho, some would still moan. We should welcome whoever gets the job and give them a chance. But if it is Mclaren,I suggest ditching the brolly for a woolly hat.

wolves need to learn from past mistakes SM is a proven prem manager .....He will bring throught the youth and has international connections this is where wolves failed in the prem (dave jones/mick) didnt have the right connections for overseas players.

Lets get him in and have a five year project to get this club back in the top flight.

Buxtonfox

Why cant't the new manager bring in his own back room team???

The club needs new vision and direction, which means new faces!!!

Worrying for me!!! Sounds like we're scrimping again!!!

Can mick do a buy 3 get 3 free option on our deadwood!!

Mac Ralph

We do not want Coyle nor Mclaren neither have got the sought of drive to push our club forward. I would prefer

Welshwolf

Has the E&S asked Moxey why he thinks he should not resign? He's surely the architect of this disgrace. If he's not, can we be told why not?

gold n black

How about David Platt, hes on his bike from City tomorrow.

IanTheLichfieldWolf

It's undoubtedly a tricky divisive one this. I will give him credit for seemingly wanting to take it on in League One (as with Owen Coyle).

On Plus Side:

His coaching credentials are supposedly excellent

He brought through excellent homegrown youngsters at Middlesbrough

Philosophy of attractive football

Impressive cv

On Negative Side:

His success at Boro was getting on for 10 years ago now.

League 1 is going to be a totally different kettle of fish in terms of integrating a patient passing style. Solbakken thought The Championship was tough! Would he be able to adapt? He doesn't know the territory.

Hard to take him seriously frankly after end of his England spell and THAT interview

He hardly impressed at Forest

Our track record with ex-England managers is worrying!

Ultimately I fear Mclaren would not be given much time before people were on his back because of his image problem. I would prefer Coyle as he would be an appointment the supporters would unite behind.

Stephen Morley

Why have we not heard about Curbs or Oneill, dont tell me there out the running

allready, who in their right mind is going to interview McClarren,he was only any

good as a number 2 and i did not see Sir Alex making much of an effort to keep him.

Honestly i am praying for divine intervention here!!!!!!!

WolfmanII

We already have an ideal duo. I would support either KARL HENRY or EGGERT JONSSON as player coach with Kevin Thelwell pulling the strings. In fact why not have both of them as joint head coaches? Both players have observed where things have gone wrong in the last couple of seasons so they are well placed to lead us to glory.

My candidate ranking:

1) Karl Henry and Eggert Jonnsson coaching duo

2) TC the sequel (think Aliens compared to Alien rather than Jurassic Park II and Jurassic Park)

3) Steve Mclaren

4) Keith Curle

5) Grahame Souness' brother

100) Steve Bruce

101) Phil Brown

If not that then please bring back TC. Let TC finish the job he started. We are missing his clipboard mentality. We saw what he could do in 13 games, now let's see him over 46. He can only improve on his 0% win ratio.

My personal feeling is after assessing potential candidates Kevin Thelwell will install himself as head coach and we will languish at the bottom of league 1. Kevin will lament the past mistakes and blame everyone else.

Our managers since MM have averaged a 19% win ratio. Can you better that Kevin?

JDG

Oh, wonderful! Now we'd have the five failed 'Ms'. Morgan, Moxey, McClaren, Misfits (the team), and the Muppets (on the Board of the Directors)! What next? Mark McGhee as Director of Football?

Pro-M's Morons take note!

Og the dog

Forget England, his experience at club level is as good as anybodys. Whoever we get should be welcomed and given a chance.

Sam wolf

Remember head coach because there is only one manager, Moxey, don't worry about that he's taken us up twice and down 3 times, employed, I have forgot how many scapegoats, put players on large contracts that are not worth a bean, built a stand that he can't fill, is useless with PR, knows sweet nothing about football and never got the sack.

We must be Wolves,In real terms he wouldn't get a job driving a number 9 bus.

Wally with the Brolly goes to the Wolves with no Lolly.

Why not? his career is as good as over anyway, he's nowt to lose by going to the managers graveyard club has he?

p.s. I fully expect to see my name has the headline if he gets it.

Darren

Just can't see what being an ex England manager has to do with it TBH and can't believe that some of those on here even think it is a reason not to have him.

Of the candidates he simply has the best record of all of them bar none so why he wouldn't get us going again I don't know but then maybe everyone on here knows best.

Albion got slaughtered for having Woy if I remember but everyone knew he was tactically sound and so is McClaren so why can't he do for us what RH did for the Albion?

Everyone is also going on about Sir Alex as a god so did he really get lucky with SM or did he know what he was talking about.

As far as I am concerned, and I won't get a say in who it is, if he was good enough for Sir Alex then I'll take a chance that he may have known what he was doing!

Far better than Coyle (his voice really gets on my nerves) who I do NOT want at all, though could cope with Darren Ferguson at a push. Steve McLaren is the man for us though - unless Morgan and Moxey see sense for once (unlikely) and re-instate Super Mick!

Padraig

The key to any new appointee being acceptable; " work with existing backroom staff"! Wasn't the refusal to dispense with Terrified Tel after Mad Mick went, one of the reasons Curbishley declined? Ditto a host of applicants? So to put in the caveat that " work with what's here" is either extreme faith in them, a fear of paying off them or any new manager and his entourage if failure happens again; What it signals is a lack of confidence of/in the people who brought you; Terry Conner ( "our first choice all along"); Stale stolebakken ( "new broom, new philosophy"); Dean Saunders ( "young(?), hungry manager, here for the long-term"!);

What is it with WWFC and sacked England managers? Taylor, Hoddle now possibly McClaren! Mind you, I think the clueless clowns could and would do worse, as proven many times; Of all the names mentioned so far, it's either Steve ' UMBRELLA,BRELLA, BRELLA' McClaren or Mr loyal himself, Owen Coyle; To be fair, the situation that Morgan and Moxey have placed the club, why would THEY want the job!

Moxeys Bryl Cream

Wasn't overwhelmed when hearing Mclaren was the new favourite. However...a football club with a big point to prove...and a manager/head coach with a big point to prove could be the perfect combination to drive Wolves on and get us back to the good old days. Let’s not forget he made Boro a team that could more than holt their own in the Prem with homegrown talent, FC Twente their first ever Dutch title, in Sir Alex Ferguson’s own words “The best coach I’ve ever worked with”! So what he did pants with England, name me one manager who hasn’t! And that forrest job was a poisend challice any way! We need to realise that we are League One and a man with that CV is absolutely the best we could get! WAW

I am amazed someone of Mclaren's calibre would want to come to a League one club like Wolves. Yet some fans seem intent on ruining one of our best options, just like the Steve Bruce fiasco.

Mclaren would get us back to the Championship, I have no doubt and that is the immediate target.

Some Wolves fans seem intent on moaning our way to League two!

gold n black adder

coyle and mcclaren ... are these names being pulled out of a hat or names throwing their hat into the ring? two guys with pretty good pedigree for our long term prospecting. either of them have the ability to lift us out of league one me thinks baldrick...

Albrightondek

This seems to be a speculative story with no public statements, as far as I know, being attributed to Steve McClaren. The references are all along the the lines of: "is said to be" or "is undertood to be". There maybe some grain of truth in it, but it could also apply to a dozen or more other out of work former managers. Tomorrow it might be; "Martin O'Neil throws his hat in the ring", so we should'nt get too excited.

Leaving all that aside for one moment, and assuming that McClaren is being considered, he would actually be quite a coup for the club. Apart from his experiences at the highest level within the game, he would be an ideal appointment to work with the young players. Boro's successful period when he was in charge there was due to his coaching of the younger players.

He gets my vote.

Mike Pearson

I find it somewhat amusing how quickly some people on here follow the herd and dismiss the idea of McClaren becoming the Head Coach based upon rumors. When do we start to let go of the stereotyping of this man and focus upon his credentials for the job? He was Assistant to Ferguson in a very successful United team and was easily the most successful Coach of Middlesborough where numerous quality players came though their Academy system. OK, he failed at the England job but he proved himself with FC Twente. He is far more qualified than most of The names being bandied about on here. Lets learn the lesson - we need a well qualified person who is provided with a long term contract who can develop young players and complement them with experienced players. He should be considered if he has an interest and wants to bother with our Club. After all, the man has made his money and I doubt is desparate in an economic sense.

The infrastructure at the Wolves is second to none but we need QUALITY experienced coaching that can deliver longevity.

Dr Wolf

Well said, fully agree.

We could do much worse.

MarlowWolf

We seem to forget we will be playing in the 3rd Tier next season. Let's let the selection process take it's course. I am encouraged that people like Coyle and McClaren are linked with the job.

In a new role of Coach, these guys are more than qualified.

ps

I think it is the 19th the "Window" opens..........................PLEASE let me hear Berra, Ward, Henry etc etc are leaving.

I don't want Wolves talking about a mass clear out, then find it is all those we know who should be leaving are staying!

Cookley Wolf

It would be interesting to know what his motivation is. I am very surprised that he is apparently so keen to come to a third division club, but he does have an excellent record and is clearly very familiar with a modern, passing, continental type of approach. I would be very pleased with if we got McLaren, and if not would go for Coyle.

gamblino

Kenny Jackett is easily the best qualified for this job. He started the revolution at Swansea. He's grounded, he'll instill discipline and he likes his teams to play a bit. That is the team we want to emulate. We are in League one remember. Mclaren would sign more mercenaries. In England he only proved he could succeed with a blank chequebook to play with.

The moral of the story is they have to ignore the fans because from the comments above we clearly dont have a clue. Just a shame its moxey making the decisions.

Brighter Future

Please get this man in! The best option by a long shot to rebuild the Wolves from the academy up. What this guy did at Middlesbrough was remarkable. There is no one else in consideration anywhere near this guys calibre.

StoneyWolf

Owen Coyle's record is not great and zero when compared to McClaren's. Coyle has won nothing, anywhere.

Coyle has poor record on loyalty and poor judgement (dumping Burnley for Bolton).

Of the two I'd have McClaren every day of the week.

JIWAL

Great idea, let's get an ex England manager in... I mean that's really worked before eh?

Just shoot me now

Jakehound

When will some people get a grip of where this club is now? The possible appointment of Steve McLaren could go wrong (as any appointment may) but surely it should be seen as the opportunity for both the club and Mclaren to rebuild reputations that have taken a really severe battering over the last couple of years. Given his continental and domestic experience the contacts he has could bring in some players either with a point to prove or gain experience and this coupled with the players we have waiting in the wings could provide us with a really exciting team.

Open your eyes guys, we could do a lot worse!

Always wolves

McClaren sounds good to me, the two biggest problems I think, are moxey has to go and tony dayley, fitness coach , REALLY !!!

wolfie5

I think if we look at at international managers we have had - Graham Turner brought us just outside the play offs in first season - then subsequent promotions. Hoddle ended up with an amazing draw record and could possibly have worked. McCarthy brought us to the Prem as an ex Ireland manager. I think Steve Mclaren has a decent record and can bring in players that Coyle wouldnt be able to attract. As some have already stated we are not in a position to be too choosy - my choice would be Maurinho but I dont see his CV in the mix. Alex Ferguson took 4 years to get any success and had a chance. I am getting sick of Wolves fans railing against every possible option. If we get Coyle or McClaren or whoever it will be its time to back them. We had 4 managers in 2 years. None of who were able to get players in because we tried waiting to the end of the transfer window each time to get a bargain and missed out. We have the money dont we Mr Morgan - get your money out and invest in this club like you should do. I think McClaren or Coyle will be excellent choices. Re Keegan - I would love that too if he did decide to join in the selection he has claimed Wolves was his boyhood team and Billy Wright his idol as he was also small.

Bully1012

Love all the Wolves fans thinking Morgan and Moxey are ever going to listen to what the crowd want......the last time they did that it meant they did a U-turn on appointing Steve Bruce. Now, what ever happened to him?! I think that probably puts the majority of fans in the "not very knowledgeable" bracket.

disgruntledingle

So... where is a quotation? Has McClaren ACTUALLY stated that he wants to join a club at the bottom and build it up? If so where is the quote? Pie in the sky stuff again!

Angels Bridge

Do they sell Black & Gold umbrellas in the club shop?

Ricoh

Steve McClaren would be a fantastic appointment as head coach for Wolves. The only reason he left Forest was because he couldnt bring in new players that they desperately needed..

He has got a brilliant pedigree, vast amounts of knowledge on different levels from champions league, international, championship and trophy winning... Anyone who thinks McClaren would be a mistake seriously need to take a reality check!!!...

He would be a long term appointment I could easily see him doing a good 5yrs at the wolves which is what all us wolves fans are crying out for... and anyone who kept middlesborough in the premier league with home grown players for so long deserves some recognition for that...

He might be a wally with a brolly but im sure when we have back to back promotions there will be 30,000 wolves fans proudly waving their "Champions" brolly with pride :-)

Rip Van Dingle

Whatever next ? Sven ??

Broseleywood Wolf

No Thanks, are the club trying to get rid of the remaining supporters!

Keep away from Coyle

Whatever you do, take a long look at Coyle before you start wishing him into the job. He won promotion at Burnley with another manager's players. He was forced to leave out his own signings because they just weren't good enough.

On to Bolton and he left a mess so big and only his friendship with Gartside kept him there as long as he was. He'd bring lame ducks such as Steve Davis, John Henry and Sandy Stewart with him. He even drags his brother-in-law round with him as kit manager.

Be warned Wolves fans - be very warned. Be very careful what you wish for.

Ben the disgruntled Dingle

I dont particularly mind Mclaren.. he's about the only one daft enough to come work with the Fat Controller anyway.

Owen Coyle and Steve Mclaren have both now expressed an interest.. there is now absolutely NO EXCUSE for a cheapskate appointment.

Hurry the Hell up and get our new manager in before we lose out.

cryingwolf

I'm surprised someone like McClaren wants to come to Wolves. I liked the idea of Coyle but now McClaren has come into the reckoning, I'd plump for him. He has a good CV and is all for bringing on the younger players. So it's a yes for me.

simon

please stop the silly posts on here saying no to mclaren without giving a reason or a

alternative. it just smacks of a knee jerk reaction, without any kind of thinking.

mclaren ticks a lot of boxes as to the type of manager we need and being an ex interntional manager helps to cope with the enormous pressure and expectation of whoever gets the job will be under. some forget mick managed internationally too.

mclaren, warnock, megson are the type i would like to see as i think they have the experience to fix a totally broken squad and keep us competitive at the same time. i think the rebuilding job might be too much for coyle and ferguson even though both are good managers.

as for backroom staff i think we need changes there too and the new man should bring his own assistant and coaches in if he chooses to.

I cant imagine any ex-successful manager wanting to come to a club who wont spend, that is lacking confidence, that has only home grown kids to begin with. How long will it be before fans are saying it was a mistake to sack Deano?

I would be inclined to say Mcclaren, but what has he done with clubs who didnt cough up cash to buy?

#noboddy

We are not gonna get a top manager,we are league one ,and slagging off everyone that is mentioned wil make promotion impossible, lets just sit and wait and hope thellwell has more clue than the last pair who picked the manager

Woolley Wanderer

Personally, I dont see why he shouldnt be given the chance to manage Wolves. Everyone seems to be bigging up Coyle, but based on what he's achieved compared to McClaren, theyre in a different league.

If we can attract someone who has achieved what he has when were in League One, I think we need to bite his hand off, give him what he wants in terms of backroom staff etc, and back him 100%.

There's too many Wolves fans who are happy to jump on someone before they've even been offered the role. Look at what happened with Steve Bruce, and where Hull are now!

If this is true, and he really wants the job, Ill back him and give him the chance to prove himself. Lets not scare him off before he's even had an interview.

#nobody

Because you're a nobody. (or should that be noboddy?)

Yamyamsam

Do we really want a " one for the future " manager surely we have had enough of amateurs at the mol, an experienced man with a good track record is needed,Steve mac or Owen coyle could well fit the bill, whoever we get we must give them a chance.

mclarensbrolly

All you lot shouting for Coyle, whats he ever done?

We should think ourselves lucky that we may be able to still attract an ex england manager, despite our current league status.

He wouldn't have got the england job without a good pedigree.

I wasn't keen on him in the past, but given our position the time could be perfect for him to come to us and build while we are at rock bottom.

wolvescon

Worse decision you could ever make! The bloke is a load of rubbish! We need a young manager who has new ideas not someone. Please we need Karl Robinson or Darren Ferguson we need managers like this not Mclaren and Coyle who are old school. Wolves for a long time is missing out what gives success if you want to be back in the premiership and actually have progress unlike with the muppets way 3 years of relegation dog fight spending and wasting large amounts of money on players that didn't play. We need to have an identity a philosophy of football and stick to it. Darren ferguson and Karl robinson types attract swansea tip tap football, this is what we need.

Og the Dog

Decent shout, why not? hes as good as any of the others mentioned. We could get Mourhino and still some people would moan.Forget England, his experience at club level would be ideal for us. Dingleandprowd

Noo look what he did with England! Disgrasefol !

If you google this you will find E&S is the only source. No other outlets have this story.

I would be very surprised if this is true. If McClaren would drop to Div 1 then we should welcome him with open arms. He has been coaching at the top in Germany and Holland recently and fits in with the coach not manager approach.

Forest was just a blip on his CV and down to their ownership.

If he could come on board and Jez could step down then we can all enjoy the summer.

We could get Sir Alex and people would moan. Graham Taylor like SS didn't get enough time. Hoddle excellent coach but poor man Manager. and I am still not sure why he left. Nevertheless that a Manager with McLaren's credentials is even being linked with the job shows that perhaps we have not entirely lost our standing in the game. I don't think we can go far wrong with McLaren or Coyle which means we will go for someone else.

I hate to say this but at the present time both McLaren and Coyle are out of our league, so if we could get either of them I would be ecstatic. Sadly it will probably end up being a cheap as chips yes man and we will be left longing for the likes of McLaren and Coyle and looking for a new manager by January.

Most on here quite rightly have the hump with Jezza; But does anyone seriously expect him to resign or be sacked? It seems that the £10 deal included guarantees for certain people's positions and as Jeez was Hayward's man, parachuted in to clean up the mess his sprogs had made, it would seem Jeez is bulletproof!

I would think for Jeez to jump ship it would take a 'blow ur socks off' offer, guaranteed for the long term;

Most of us knew he was on a good screw @ WWFC, but £1.2m! Wow:

The fast, and professional way Manchester United have handled there management transfer, just say's our new manager should show up maybe a week before the new season. That's the way things seem to work with our executive management. We not only need a manager now, we also need an executive manager '' NOW''

The Cullis Dome

And another thing.....I know their histories are in many ways very different, but there are uncanny and scary parallels between Solbaken and McClaren.....both moderate, lower league players [not in itself a disqualification], both successful in smaller continental football, both disasters in the top notch German League. Please add this to my previous caveat...others have attempted to weigh up his overall record.

Ye Olde South Bank

OMG, I shudder at the mere thought of McClaren at the Wolves.

Not content with looking a prize plonker as "The Wally With A Brolly" at Wembley, McClaren then ended up somehow talking like a Dutchman (who was struggling to speak plain English) when at FC Twente. Google a few videos if you aint seen 'em.

I think Wolves have made themselves look more than foolish enough in the last 16 months without adding to it by employing someone who's seen as a bit of a clown by many. Each to his own, I guess, so if others fancy him, fine.... but I'd rather take Smegson than that Wally.

mick the miller

Just appoint Coyle . McClaren is useless. Wake up people!!!!!!!!

The Voice of Reason

He's absolutely useless with his European Cup finalist medal, Dutch championship and League Cup winners' medal. We need someone who has achieved nothing in the game like Coyle.

RichWolf64

Given our last three managers have been Terry Conner, Solbakken and Dean Saunders appointing Forest Gump would be an improvement on what we've had of late.

So anyone linked to the job at the moment is better than what we've had or indeed got, which is nothing but league one rubbish for 12 months.

kenco

This is pointless every few days asking us fans on the next linked coach.

How about the club come out with a plan.

We could swap Poxey Moxey for Cortez after todays developments.

then I think we need a real change of culture.

Personally I would bring Coyle in and his henchmen as our staff are rubbish as shown by the last few years of injuries and par performances by the players.

Secondly I would still like to bring in a director of football not with that title but someone who can voice their opinion with fans on the footballing decisions of the club. Plus for me people we need to bring in are the likes of Wilkins, McClaren, Coyle, Taylor but whether you want them as coaches or DoF is the decisions that need to be made also cortez used the experience he had in terms of using Atkin's knowledge of the game ultimately we need a board and coaching staff concentrating on one goal promotion.

wozdawolf

Us wolves supports have to be realistic, we are a league one club now, Mclaren is a good coach, with a pretty good record.

Seems like some supporters are holding out for Rafa, Mourinho, or Ferguson..........WAKEY WAKEY

PandaWolf

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! (standing with arms in the air)

I'm not sure why everyone is against him? Forget about the England job, he took Middlesborough to a european final, has had success at FC Twente, and did okay at Wolfsburg. This would be a good appointment.

Mature Wolf

McClaren as Director of Football with Gary Neville as Head Coach.....perfect!

Its good to dream.

MIKETHEBIKE

IF MORGAN AND MOXEY BELIEVE McCLAREN IS THE RIGHT MAN FOR THE JOB, THEN SIGN HIM.

IF THOSE WHINGEING FANS SAY NO, SO BE IT, THEY DONT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT MOST OF THE TIME AND MUST BE IGNORED, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM

MY PREFERENCE.IS O'NEILL BUT I DOUBT WHETHER HE WOULD CONSIDER A DIVISION ONE CLUB.

NO ITS UP TO THE BOARD AND THE TWO MUPPETS RESPONSIBLE FOR DRAGGING WOLVES INTO ONE HELL OF A MESS TO SHOW US THEY REALLY MEAN BUSINESS THIS TIME..

REMEMBER THE FANS DIDNT WANT STEVE BRUCE AND LOOK WHAT HAPPENED

TO HULL CITY.

THERE ARE PLENTY OF PROSPECTIVE MANAGERS AVAILABLE AND OUT OF WORK,SOME ARE NOT WORTH CONSIDERING BUT THREE OR FOUR ARE.

MOVE CAREFULLY MORGAN AND MOXEY, THE GOOSE THAT LAYS THE GOLDEN EGG MAY NOT BE THAT FAR AWAY.

Wombourne wolf

Why do we keep getting offered has beens

What's wrong with a young coach like Di Matteo or Wilkins.

Hurlstone Park Wanderer

Steve McClaren is four years younger than Ray Wilkins and has done way more in management.

Nothing wrong with Di Matteo, but why would he come to a third division club?

given our current standing i think either McClaren or Coyle would be excellent appointments.. Let's hope the club gets its right (this time)

BrummieRobWolves

I here that Saunders was losing the plot? He was scrapping with Doyle and Johnson after the Brighton game and he was to blame for other problems in the dressing room - Karl Henry apart!

Kford Hoaxer

I say get John De Wolf in. Like Arsene Wenger, his name is virtually the same as the club's.

Plus he does TV programmes called 'Cooking with John' and 'Sleeping with John'. Not too sure about the second one.

Cudgie

Some of you on here really do need to get a grip.............................We are no longer a big club & this guy is more than capable of a rebuilding job.......................Give the guy a go!

wolvesboyukstoke

I rarely agree with Petenuts but this time im convinced that this would be great for both parties. You do not achieve at the very top if your an yes man. Mclaren would be a big name that players would want to play for so with that in mind, Sign him up now. oh err and b y the way

Poxey Moxey out

Coaches all out

That thing from the Villa scum Out

The Real Bangkok Wolf

There is no point getting anyone in as long as Moxey is calling the shots.

We will probably get someone after the transfer window shuts.

MOXEY OUT!

Walshie

Nice to see "expert fans" as still barking on about Coyle and Ferguson.

I would like a clear explanation as to why you think these 2 are going to do the business with us?

Owen Coyle took an established mid-table Premier League team down to the Championship and won 4 of his last 23 games in charge, losing 16 of them, yeah he got Burnley promoted but never built a squad at Turf Moor, just rode the crest of a wave he got them on the jumped ship!

Darren Ferguson, lord give me strength, he has managed 3 clubs and got 4 relegations on his CV!!

Pat K

I think he could and would do the bizz for Wolves FC if appointed. His age and experience within the game is just what the club needs to move forward again.

Just read Mel Eeave's column in the Sunday Mercury,he got it spot on about the structure of the club.he is the the sort of man we need at the Wolves

If we're after a coach not a manager, why not approach Phil Neville, the guy has got a lot of top-flight experience and would probably now be up for the challenge?

Doesn't matter who we have, all the fans will moan, talk about fickle!!

Back whoever we get and stop moaning will you.

We8Sandwell

do you even know what the word fickle means sunshine? fickle is changing your mind easily, but fans arent changing their mind if you look! they just dont agree about who the new HC should be or cant you tell the difference?. and who said we wont back whichever man gets the job, dumbo?

Billyboy

Lets take a gamble we in 3rd tier of football lets introduce Mr Phil Neville player manager with some help upstairs ie director of football

Great, we move from the chuckle brothers ie Moxey & Morgan to the Marx Brothers, Moxey, Morgan & Mclaren.

Mclaren will be a disaster!

Chriswolf1

Owen Coyle head coach & Keith Downing as his asisstant

calgarywolf

No no to all of the applcants. Lets have some new blood their must be a lot better candidates out there.

Geoff Thomas

Wolves' long-suffering supporters have understandably become interested in the talk of a prospective manager, now that a few well-known names have expressed an interest. I don't really want to put a damper on things, but it should be realised that the successful applicant will be the one that Jez Moxey finds the cheapest to appoint. We may get McClaren or Coyle but I wouldn't put my jacket on it!

Geoff T

Spirit123

There isno way they should be considering McLaren as a candidate...remember the job he did at

Forest two season ago.......walked out after a short time. Lets go for a man who will bring 5 - 10 thousand to the gate and who will play attacking football. The man for the job is Kevin Keegan. Let him get his own team in and have a complete clear out including the fitness coach who has creamed this club for too long. This would show that they really do mean business.

stuart

i'm sick of having sacked managers or ones that haven't won anything. give it to a young keen manager. Someone like Ian Archibald who took over a young Partick side. winning the title without loosing a game. A six fooot Glaswegian to sort out our failing dressing room

Worse than the Bhattis!

I just think Mclaren's appointment will produce like Taylor and Hoddle a series of 1-1 draws! We need someone more bold and adventurous like Owen Coyle whose sides always produce goals and interesting football not sideways passes like the three ex England bosses have done. We always make Steve McLaren type appointments though so expect him to be given the job this week!

Golden Wonder

I was one of those who didn't want Bruce here so i probably won't go down as the best qualified to give my judgement on who should be our next manager or head coach whatever you want to call him.

Steve Mcclaren is a experienced coach all the same. Yes he has baggage but so do most managers at some time in their careers. Very few have success like Fergie and i think it could be an inspired choice. (Famous last words).

George Boateng was quoted as saying he was the best coach he ever worked with and his record isn't that bad.

simon

was just thinkin as Mick is still loved by some here, I'm sure Moxley and Morgan could offer him

a Buy 3 Get One Free Deal to take the deadwood off our hands.

He could, buy ward, henry and ohara and get edwards for free!!!

Moxey Why Are You Still Here?

Do the decent thing and resign, Moxey

SEATTLE WOLF

No, absolutely not.

Besides, how will our young players understand his contrived Dutch accent?

So, historically looking back, how did those previous English National Team managers do at the Molineux?

ian clarke

no no no way bring in passionate football minded guy Warnock or Di matteo not mclaren or Coyle, Warnock for me with Alex rae has his assistant or bring back the Governor Paul ince who loves wolves, warnock to kick some butt with current squad of players

SEATTLE WOLF

I should add, maybe I was a bit too easy to judge in McClaren....

If we were still in the Championship, with "championship funds " to spend, then I think I would plump for McClaren, as he could attract better players that we all would hope Moxey and Motgan would release the necessary funds for.

However, big financial cutbacks are in store for our League One survival, because at this stage it should be categorized as such, having twice plummeted out of the two divisions above; we obviously want to get promoted, but we have to be more prudent in how we support our outlook and blend some humility into our sometimes over grandiose expectations.

Thus, I give the nod to the the ex-Bolton gaffer, because he can work with less and get more at this third tier of competition, with greater success than I believe McClaren could.

Wolves have a history of former International managers.ie.Tommy Docherty,Graham Taylor,Glenn Hoddle & Mick McCarthy. McCarthy being the most successful.AS for Steve McLaren? Not sure.by He has had his fair share of failure as have many of the other names mentioned as potential contenders.I'd be more interested in going for some up and coming manager who is strong enough to face up to Morgan & Moxey as well as the deadwood left after transfers and out of contract players hAVE gone.I am annoyed about the affrontary of Moxey & Morgan who go about their business pretending nothing has happened when they should be held accountable for their part in Wolves' demise. The choice of the next manager of Wolves as many commentators have said is crucial. Many fans feel betrayed by the club and I do not feel that Moxey's continued presence at the club is liked by the fans including myself.Wolves are in a mess but the rot needs to stop now.

The Seeker

Where's Wally?

Prairie Wulf

I am on the verge of giving up on Wolves. The new appointment will not make any difference at all

. There will be no improvement until Moxey leaves WW!

johnnyrichards

He should be given an interview like the rest and it should seen what direction and passion he shows in that interview if he's the right man for the job. The only off putting thing is we've not done too well with previous England managers, he's had a lot of experience in both coaching roles with a big club in Man Utd and did well at Boro, Twente so his style of football should be attractive.

Old Golds Worth More

If we must go the Head coach route, then Stuart Pearce is the ideal candidate. If we could prise him away from his England duties, and if of course he is willing to come to a League One club. He has experience working with younger players (England under 21 team), has a proven no nonsense approach, and is a born fighter, all the attributes we desperately need.

NEIL ELLIS

Where are all these young talented kids going to come from? We havnt had a good system in place for years as regards bringing in talented youngsters! we have had to rely on spending cash to bring in players-and that does not bode well at all, especially when Jez "deep pockets" Moxey is pulling the purse strings

Burntwood Boy

JUST A THOUGHT BUT---------------------

With Fergie retired, what about Mike Phelan? He's coached TOP PLAYERS and Moyes will probably bring in his own staff, SO Mike maybe available. What you reckon?

alan lane

only one get ray wilkings fast then back him

mardygit.

Not sure about Mclaren, failed with England dismally and he had the best players in England to choose from. He worked with Sven for at least 18 months, England qualified for the final stages of every tournament with Sven. Mclaren failed at the first stage of the Euro's. Managing Wolves is a bit more difficult i think, than managing England, Coyle is by far my choice, something about a scot managing English clubs most of them have success. COME ON WOLVES.

chris h

The overriding impression,I think held by the vast majority of Wolves fans,is that Morgan and Moxey just want to do things on the cheap as far as the football side of the business(as Jez Moxey calls it) is concerned .Morgan has put in his £30m and there will not be a penny more. Sounds a lot and it is a lot of money, but the assets he has acquired are valued well in excess of his outlay, due to Sir Jack selling him the club for a tenner Jez Moxey has been paid millions over the years,it appears to me ,as Frank Zappa once said, he is only in it for the money.I had hopes after two disgraceful back to back relegations that there would be a sea change and the two senior men would see the error of their ways and start concentrating 100% on delivering us a quality football team. Now it appears they offered the job to another'cheap novice' in Flitcroft, who turned them down.We are also told that they do not want the new coach to bring in many of his own staff. That is repeating one of the stumbling blocks why other senior managers were not previously considered. As I understand it management costs are not included in the fair play rules. So there is no real excuse ,they just want to save money and in doing so will limit the type of head coach they appoint, since any half decent coach would want his own team.Doing things on the cheap, not prioritising on the core business of football. It looks like things will never change.'Meet the new boss same as the old boss'.

paul davo

McClaren has the knowhow to get us back to the promise land, he has got to have a very good list of players to bring to wolves, and did bring on a lot of boro kids when he was there, i say give him the job then if he does take us back to the prem move him upstairs and bring in a top man, like we should of with mick, but first Morgan must back him with the parachute money and the cash to come in from the sales of Johnson, O"Hara, Sako, that way he will build a side to take on the championship the year after next, Coyle would also do a good job, but has not got the contacts of McClaren, PS GRIFFITHS SPL PLAYER OF THE YEAR, got to be worth 3 or 4m now, cash in Quick

Dukinfield Wolves: Fairways division (not Mark!!!)

How about a Mancini/ Fergie dream team?

The right man for this job- Steve Cotterill

Eddie

Split opinions & reactions posted on here. When you compare his CV with McCarthy's, Conners, Solbakken, Saunders its a no brainer really. Everyone against seem to pick 3 faults with the choice & none are football related - Brolly, accent &Nottingham Forest. FGS to have two managers like Steve McLaren & Owen Coyle interested in being appointed by Wolves speaks volumes for our club. Steve McLarens tenure at Notts Forest was about as spectacular as Alex McLeish.

Remember also - this position is for head coach, a DOF is still to be appointed.......

Maybe they will get it right.

I dont really mind who gets the job long as its not darren feguson or jacket!! why not neil warnock?? maybe too old, coyle or mcclaren wud be great, wolves fans, your some of the best at times, but you can be some of the worst, be careful what you wish for, you wanted mick out, now look where we are!!! if he'd of stayed, we'd till be in the prem!! no doubt about that!!!

We8Sandwell

if mick had stayed we'd still be in the prem and theres no doubt about that? lol!! what are you on sunshine? can i have some? have you even been to a game? the record shows MM was one of the worst managers in prem history at wolves and at sunderland. and most of super micks useless players have just sent us down AGAIN or hadnt you noticed? forget us, its you who should be careful of what you wish for if your that bad a judge!!!

He has the makings of a good manager as well as experience but at the end of the day managers are not on the pitch. We have some bad wood in the squad that needs cutting out.

Wally with the Brolly?

Lets hope he doesn't turn up on our touchline wearing a 'hat'

I wonder what ryhmes with hat?

Seriously though, I'd take him over Coyle.

Wolves. You need to sort this otherwise we'll be playing against the Rose and Crown in 2 years time and they've got some tough players.

Rob South Bank Smith

What is Phil Brown upto these days ???

Just a thought !!!

Dave

Why is everyone against this??

If we want a coach, a good one, he is up their with the best. We have already been told we are heading down a European route, and he has done well with this structure before.

He had a bad time at Forrest, no doubt, but they have been a mess for a long time.

I think him, with a DoF would be ideal.

If you think Coyle is a good option have a look at his stats at Bolton, speak to a few Bolton fans (i have to live near them, not pleasent)

Look at McLaren, he has done well at Middlesborough, 50.00 win rate for England, then did well at Twente twice. Bad at forrest and Wolfsburg. Both in a mess.

Give the guy a chance, England only gave him 1 year. Forrest 13 games, Wolfsburg 24 games, and England just 18.

He did well when given 250 by Middles, and 160 over 2 stints with Twente.

Dont expect promotion this year. Stay calm, enjoy a few wins, and watching a new team, that in a few years might get us back to the prem.

mark ww

brian kidd anyone ? could do a steve clarke.......... just a thought !

Reasoned Thinking

We should be flattered that a coach of McClaren's calibre would even want to consider to drop down to the 3rd tier of the Football League to a manage a club who's fans collectively seem to dislike the idea of anyone. If he reads whats written on here I'm sure he will soon run a mile and once again us wolves fans will have successfully contributed the the further demise of our club. Its time we all stood up and took responsibility for our contribution rather than blaming Moxey and Morgan. We have already successfully got MM the sack and prevented the appointment of Steve Bruce, so are we going to continue to whinge about anything that might be good for the club and stand in the way of progress. Now is the time to pick a manager of high calibre and experience (IF WE CAN ATTRACT ONE!!) and if someone like McClaren or Coyle is interested we should be snapping their hands off. Get behind the club you support, thats what supporters are supposed to do is it not?

Are you watching what I'm watching

Steve McClaren for me. We have to make a fresh start now and I believe he would do a good job. If you remember when Steve Bruce was mentioned everyone was saying we don't want him. Look what happened. Stop moaning and lets see what happens.

When the seasons starts I hope we have got rid of all the rubbish that MM brought and if McClaren is the the man then so be it.

Get behind whoever the manager maybe! Its time to blood the young players that we have and give them a chance and i think McClaren will bring them on.
