Wolves battled to a goalless draw with a strong Manchester United in the Under-21 Premier League despite playing the majority of the game with 10 men.

Teenage midfielder Zeli Ismail received his marching orders in the 10th minute of the game at Altrincham's Moss Lane.

But Steve Weaver's side battened down the hatches to grind out a point against a United team which included first-teamers Anderson, Nick Powell, Alexander Buttner and Chris Smalling.

Ismail went close for Wolves early in the contest with a 20-yard shot which whistled just over the crossbar and moments later delivered a dangerous cross from the right which just eluded Liam McAlinden.

However, things quickly turned sour for the 19-year-old when he was shown a straight red card by the referee after he caught Smalling with a late challenge.

Despite being a man down Wolves pushed United back and keeper Sam Johnstone had to punch clear a free-kick from Anthony Forde.

United missed an opportunity to break the deadlock in the 25th minute when Powell sidefooted wide from a good position. Jack Price then forced a full length save from Johnstone as Wolves hit back.

Clear-cut chances were at premium although it took a timely intervention from Jamie Tank to thwart Larnell Cole who was through on goal.

Brazilian midfielder Anderson missed a glorious chance for United when he fired wide from inside the box.

United had the best of the few attempts at goal after the break as Powell fired wide while Jesse Lingard lifted a shot over the bar after a precision pass from Buttner.

Price almost gave the visitors the lead after he took a return pass from Forde, but the skipper's shot from the edge of the box was just too high.

Wolves then had a justifiable penalty appeal rejected after Buttner's challenge on Forde.

United applied the pressure late on and Cole squandered a good chance after playing a one-two with Lingard.
