Wolves caretaker boss Terry Connor today revealed he has been told to get the team ready for Saturday's clash at Newcastle with a view to him being in charge for the game.

The club is now prepared for its search for a new manager to drag on beyond the weekend if necessary.

They were initially confident of appointing Mick McCarthy's successor in time for the trip to Tyneside.

Connor, 49, who is being assisted by development coach Steve Weaver and the backroom staff, has been told by chief executive Jez Moxey to continue preparations with a view to being at the helm for the trip to the North East.

Connor has been at Molineux for over 12 years, the last four-and-a-half as assistant to McCarthy.

He said: "It was a tough week for everyone last week.

"The lads had to work hard to get through the next few days.

"It was strange for us all not having the boss around but, by Thursday, they were back training well.

"They went away at the weekend and I asked them to reflect on what had happened and then come back yesterday with it being business as usual, whoever was in charge of training.

"As it's transpired, the new manager hasn't been appointed and the chairman, Steve Morgan, and Jez have asked me to look after it.

"We will be preparing the lads as usual for Saturday's game with Newcastle until told otherwise.

"We've got to prove people wrong and, hopefully, we will get a chance on Saturday to do that.

"We will be under the microscope and everyone will be wondering how we're going to respond."
