Wolves boss Mick McCarthy tells players to ‘seize the day’ at Everton
Thursday 17th November 2011, 11:00AM GMT.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy today urged his side to ‘seize the day’ and make the most of their luck against Everton.
Saturday’s opponents have lost six of the last seven, although they have played Chelsea twice, both Manchester clubs, Liverpool and surprise packet Newcastle in that sequence.
The match at Goodison Park will be played against a backdrop of dissent on the blue half of Merseyside, with Everton supporters set to stage a second protest march against the board before the game.
McCarthy is concentrating on matters on the pitch and believes teams get lucky at certain points of the season, after ending their run of one point in seven games with a 3-1 win against Wigan before the international break.
He said: “I just think there are times in a season when you hit form and it works out for you. It’s a fickle finger of fate sometimes – look at Wigan. It was our day. We got away with it.
“But I kept saying it would turn for us because of the way we were playing. I do think there are periods in a season where you just get lucky.”

I hope your right Mick and it’s a game we can certainly get something from.
As a wolves fan I have always hated playing teams that are on a poor run as they normally turn the corner when they play us….a part from Wigan that is! ;o)

Hear we go again the E & S ,talking as Everton will be there for the taking,as they’ve lost 6 of the last 7, but has they say Everton have lost to Chelsea twice, both Man Utd/Man City, and Liverpool/Newcastle. Lets not get to carried away although the win against Wigan was most welcome, lets not forget they had enough chances to win the match themselves, it just worked out on the day our finishing was better than theirs. Having watched us play Everton over many years, ive always found them a very hard team to beat at Home, never mind Away. So whilst we go their with a fair amount of confidence, and capable of getting a result, we still need to be a lot tighter at the back as a unit.GOOD LUCK LADS ON SATURDAY: UTW:

My mum used to say ‘if you can’t think of anything nice to say…don’t say anything at all’ – 2. Getsomein, my mum would be very disappointed in you. Do you trawl through every Wolves story to ensure that you can add a ‘Get Mick out’ comment put in. My team doesn’t need your sort of ‘support’ so please disappear to the Baggies boards, I’m sure they’ll be more interested in what you have to say.

just to be a negative numpty but how many times has mad mick said in the last 2 years that he is not concerned for his job as he knows his position is safe no matter what happens, then he says and i quote!
“I was always told that a little bit of insecurity makes you work harder, and it does,” said the boss.
errrr double standards much? i have said it before on here but mick for the sake of everyone please engage your brain before speaking to the press!!

Surely this is what he says every game… One result doesn’t turn a corner especially against a very poor wigan side…
Getting to the serious time now. A few good results including a couple of supprise wins and we could be in for a easy ride in the 2nd half of the season cause I truely feel the likes of Wigan (already down), Albion, Blackburn (down if Kean stays in charge) and also Norwich and Swansea will struggle, I just hope we don’t struggle as much…
Another season of finger biting….

A word of caution, although I would dearly love to see them do well, please note we have just had an international break and we have never won after one.
Perhaps this is another item that needs laying to rest. As we had never beaton Wigan at Mol in the prem, that one has been laid to rest, lets hope this one can be as well.

Was delighted to see us beat (a very poor) wigan side last time out and think that this game against (a very poor) Everton side will give a better indication of where we are as a club.
To all those who said it is wrong to boo the team I point out this quote from Mick on the thread about contracts…
“I was always told that a little bit of insecurity makes you work harder, and it does,” said the boss.
I think he meant the players but it seems to have helped him to realise that he needs to do better too – so get the boo’s ready for next time!!!!!

Unless we find oil in Wolverhampton, and God forbid it’s not in the garden of a Baggies Fan, we can only wait for a Russian or Arab oil billionaire to pump money into the club to achieve what some people clearly think is their right.
I had hopes that when Gaddaffi went on the run we might have been able to tempt him to move to the Black Country, but he’s gone and most of the others have already snapped up a club.
Wish too much and Morgan might sell off to a ‘Thai businessman’, the same who are doing such damage to the Blues and others.
We are doing okay for a team that has weathered a five match disaster zone. If Mick can learn from his mistakes we may have a chance. At this point who would we want to take over.
MacClaren or Sven? No more ‘ex England’ managers please.
Ince? Where is his record?
I thought the whole point of being a Wolves fan was to expect just this. I’ve followed them down to the old Fourth and back up, and I haven’t seen any glory in ‘head chopping’ when we are still mid table.

Let’s all get behind the lads like we did against Wigan and hope that we can get something out of the Everton game.

No wonder the Black Country declined the way it did. I’d bet most of you (Old enough to remember) supported Margaret Thatcher in her dismantling of Industry in the Midlands back in the 70′s and 80′s ( We can go on the dole, it’s better than working).
All you happy clappers pretending the glass is full, when in REALITY it is almost empty. We beat a poor, poor Wigan team and now Mick turns to Poetry in an effort to motivate the lads. Perhaps next week we will have a line or two from Numpty Dumpty.
Morgan needs to “Seize the Day” and and send the other two M’s on a one way trip “Up the hill to get a pail of water”.
I want the best for my club, Wolverhampton Wanderers, not what is best for this inept management team.
I am not going away either.

I hope MM is right. I’ve often thought that luck does seem to follow the brave or positive people, and Wolves could do with a point sure enough – three would be a godsend.
From reports on here, it looks likely that we were cash strapped during the transfer window, and that isn’t a problem for the fans to solve – full houses would help of course, but much finance comes by way of Sky etc and it came as a surprise to me that our prudent board in fact had the club’s finances stretched so tightly.
If as reported we are looking at the January sales with only loans in mind, and even those in respect of seemingly ordinary players, we will need quite a few good slices of luck between now and next May, and Saturday would be a good time for them to start arriving,
Best wishes to whoever plays and also those lucky enough to get to Goodison.

FAO Less than 9000 for a home game – calling Everton a very poor side given they have had finishes of 4th, 5th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th over the past seven Premier League seasons is a load of rubbish. They have already played all the decent teams and now have a run of winnable games. They had Baines, Jagielka and Rodwell start for England in the last week and have other players Wolves could only dream of like Fellaini, Barkley, Cahill and Saha.

39. “any explanation for how being positive and pointing out success equates to being a supporter of the destruction and demoralisation of Thatcher?”
Exactly! A lot of people supported Thatcher and voted for her, just like a lot of you folks support Mick. Thatcher sent the country south, in the same direction Mick is sending this club.
As far as “pointing out success”. If your idea of success is beating Wigan, then you have my empathy.
Come back after Everton and tell me about success.
No problem with being positive, but when you fall off that cliff, positive thinking won’t stop you from hitting the rocks below.
I want my club to be successful. Unfortunately, MM’s pedigree in this league does not point in that direction, even when I think positive.
Hi 42, think you have not concluded that in our days, successful teams need top-top playes and that these players cost MONEY. So, forget about being champs!! we only want to stay in the league a few years to try to build on good players who may cost around 100K but who develop into euro2012 qualifiers despite so-called fans who said he is not up to PL level.
Maybe, Trapattoni is also a thicko to select him in his team!
Even Man City have taken a few years to become a candidate for PL top despite the millions invested. Here, we do not have the dosh, (one top player is worth our whole team + MM ) and we are not bottom and still, some people are unhappy.

26 CAPITAL WOLF – Interesting how the moaners never have anything to say when we win.
42 wall street wolf – Your wrong. Since Mick has been here we have become a much more successful club than before he came, so to say he is taking us south like Thatcher is nonesense. He has managed to consolodate our position in the premiership and has built a team who in many peoples eyes are capable of finnishing mid table this season. Even if we just scrape survival again this season we would have still equalled last seasons position, which wont be the progress we all want, but also wont be going south as you say.
If we go down this season, I think it would be fair to say that we would still be in a much better position than when he came to this club, as we would keep hold of a few decent players, we would be financially better off than when he got here as well as having 2 years worth of parachute payments.
I think your comparision would have work if Thatcher managed to turn every single one of us into millionaires, but then struggled to progress further by turning us all into billionaires. Thatcher ran us into the ground, Mcarthey has given us our most successful period in many years, but other than that they are exactly the same.

Bookies here in Australia are offering 7-1 for a Wolves win against Everton tomorrow.

Sue,
Noisy and Billy have been noticeably absent during our magnificent run of 1 point in 8 games but more so towards the end of the run.

For the previous 3 decades I had this recurring dream that we would find a Manager who would get us promoted in 3 seasons, as champions, then keep us in the Premier League for 2 seasons. And at roughly a quarter way through the 3rd season we would be 13th.
Thanks for making the dream come true Mick.
Be happy!!!

Wall Street Wolf – I seem to recall being significantly better off as Thatcher stopped subsidising massively unprofitable industries that were run by unions holding the general population to ransom with ridiculous pay demands. My lower taxes gave me more disposable income and I was in a position to spend more on leisure activities such as going to see the Wolves play home and away when I felt like it.
By contrast, I’ll be cancelling my season ticket next season because the ludricous spending of the last government without encouraging more job creation to employ the extra half million social science graduates means I’m paying considerably higher taxes and have less disposable income.

47, Not true pal. Best and most constructive critiques come from people who comment all around, win or lose. You might be happy that we beat Wigan, I certainly was. But the manner of our play, as against Swansea, left a bit to be desired, wouldn’t you say? If you think we’ve turned the corner after beating a Wigan side much worse than us that’s up to you. Others have a right to disagree and say so.
Andy, I agreed with you the other day that by and large soccer is better today than in the 80s.But I cannot agree with the above. The root of current problems ,which started with Thatcher ,is personal greed. It is interesting that all you can refer to his your personal dIsposable income. So it was worth having a few more bob in pocket ,to destroy large swathes of British industry as a result of hideous high rates of interest. Many good companies failed because they could not afford to pay the banks. The monetary economist that Thatcher adhered to ,said on his death bed:’perhaps we were wrong with those high interest rates’.It was a bit late by then.

52 CAPITAL WOLF – Just pointed out that the moaners do exactly the same as what you accuse the happy clappers of doing. When we started so brightly for the first 3 games, not once did the likes of mr 1%, Bobwolf and many others make a comment. The first loss came along and they were out in force. Have you ever thought that maybe some of the happy clappers dont comment after some losses because they are too dishartened to bother. Maybe the same could be said about the moaners not commenting when we win as they are too overjoyed to comment. Who knows?

I would like to take issue with you Exile – I have never been away – look back through those 7 weeks without a win and see how often I didn’t post after a match. Still not cheering me up by telling us how much you bet on Wigan though?
However, much more wound up by Andy – how anyone looking back could think what Thatcher did was a good idea is beyond me. We don’t hardly actually make anything any more. She left us in the hands of her famous ‘service’ industries. The bankers shafted this country with greedy speculation and reckless lending. Now they are still destroying one country after another by charging punitive interest rates.

IT’S ALL SWINGS AND ROUNDABOUTS Matey. What does it change? People should be free to say what they feel & say what they like to say. I have never abused a happy clapper, just made observations about them. I don’t agree with them, can’t help their illusions. Your monicker is REALIST. Now what can one say about that, given your comments. Have YOU ever thought?
Did you really think after the first three games we were a top ten finishing side? Did you? Realist?
I didn’t comment because I too am a realist. I don’t like the way his club, our players, are being coached (if even that can be said) I have a right to say so, if I think so. Agree?
58 – the right to say what you think in a sensibly argued way is fine. You are right we were shockingly bad against Swansea and we didn’t deserve a point.
However to be abused by the likes of Exile, who came on here before the game saying he would be betting on Wigan as they would definitely beat us, only to return after to say winning proved nothing, is another matter altogether. Don’t even get me started on the ones who said they wanted us to lose so McCarthy would get sacked.

Noisy,
after Jez’s utterances today, looks like defeat against Wigan wouldn’t have cost the manager his job anyway, unless that was a veiled “Vote of Confidence”
Difficult too, I agree, to claim to be a fan and then put money on the opposition to beat your team. Perhaps I should be asking Exile how he felt about winning the game and losing his stake. Seems to me in this respect he has more money than he has conviction about his fealty. Agh well that’s his business and his right too.
Have to say though, I think we could benefit from a change of manager. My sympathies to him if he’s restricted by the other two M’s but I don’t think the guy commands much respect from seasoned Premiership players, which is the real reason he can’t sign them. That may well be our undoing. Do you really believe Noisy, we have much quality in our squad, I know they’re all tryers but is that enough?

Any victory is success, I know it was two weeks ago, and only Wigan but I for one feel better going into todays game on the back of it (better than the alternative)I suppose its easier to be negative coz we aint manure or citeh so our win % is not going to be that good so playing the averages your going to be more right than wrong. Me I’ll be clapping like a seal when we do anything good today and keeping a dignified silence if we dont
