Boss Mick McCarthy today claimed Wolves can banish their survival struggles by securing a top-10 place.

McCarthy, whose side took on Real Zaragoza today in their final friendly before next Saturday's Premier League opener at Blackburn, believes cutting out the defensive errors could propel his side to mid-table.

"We were seven points off 10th spot last season, but we have the potential to finish on 47 points and I don't see why we can't," said the boss.

"I'm sure every manager can say it, but we gave a few points away last season with late goals at Fulham, Man United, Bolton, Villa and West Brom.

"And we didn't really nick a point all season – the only time I thought we were close to it was Fulham at home when they equalised and we had to defend and got away with it."

McCarthy's belief is fuelled by his claim that his squad is the strongest in his five years at the club.

"Without a doubt this is the strongest squad I've had," he said.

"Some players have been here three, four or five years and they've been in the Premier League for two years and they've all become better players for it.

"And we've added better players, so no question."
