Wolves have been offered Manchester City's Michael Johnson as well as Liverpool's Jay Spearing as boss Mick McCarthy intensifies his search for a midfielder.

Johnson, who was linked with the club in January, has been offered to Wolves on loan as the 23-year-old seeks to rebuild his career after long-term injury.

As exclusively reported in the Express & Star last Wednesday, tough-tackling Spearing is also on the Molineux radar as the Reds look to broaden the 22-year-old's experience and ease a logjam of midfielders at Anfield.

But McCarthy, who had free agent Thomas Hitzlsperger at Molineux for talks on Thursday, is assessing his options at the moment.

It has also emerged that McCarthy pulled the plug on Wolves' move for left-back Lee Wallace, who joined Glasgow Rangers for £1.5million from Hearts last week.

Wolves had a deal in place to sign the Scotland international for as little as £900,000, but the manager backed off because he wasn't convinced the 23-year-old was better than George Elokobi or Stephen Ward.
