Wolves head Adam Hammill queue
Wednesday 19th January 2011, 1:00PM GMT.
Wolves today moved into pole position for Barnsley winger Adam Hammill after hammering Doncaster 5-0 in the FA Cup last night.
Hammill was understood to be having a medical today after visiting the training ground at Compton yesterday, but it’s still to be confirmed that Wolves have matched the £500,000 buy-out clause in his contract.
With Everton also understood to be keen on the Scouser, the club were today tight-lipped on the deal after losing out on Steve Sidwell to Fulham as he underwent his medical.
But sources close to the deal are confident that Wolves now look favourites to land Hammill in time for him to be included in manager Mick McCarthy’s squad for Saturday’s clash against his former club Liverpool.
Wolves are ready to offer him £20,000-a-week in a bid to see off Blackpool, who have already had a bid accepted after he enjoyed a successful loan spell there two years ago.
And Barnsley fans, via message boards, have claimed Hammill told them after training yesterday that he was travelling down to Wolverhampton to sign.
Wolves’ extra spending power means Ian Holloway’s side are one of the few Premier League teams they can outmuscle when it comes to wages.
But they know Everton could offer Hammill better personal terms and McCarthy remains cautious of any signings this month, with only 12 days of the window left.
He said: “We’re not really close to anything. We’ve tried and been thwarted on a number of occasions.
“The best news for me is getting the lads back like Jody Craddock and Karl Henry.
“David Edwards and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake will be back shortly and they are good players for me.”
Leigh Griffiths is also heading to Wolves and will play his last game for Dundee against Falkirk on Saturday before completing his move south.
One man on his way out of Molineux is Matt Hill, who will complete a permanent move to Championship side Barnsley today.
The 29-year-old, who played 15 times for Wolves after arriving at Molineux in 2008 from Preston, first returned to the second tier last season playing 16 times for QPR.
The left-back first went to Oakwell on loan last October.

We don’t need this player – we have enough wingers already and this lad is unproven at this level….
Where is all the promised premiership quality ???
Where are the defenders everyone (except Mick) can see we need ???
Beating a poor Doncaster side may end up being the worst result we could have cos Moxey will use it to justify spending nothing again…..
