Happy wanderer Matt Doherty is determined to take his chance at Wolves after running into rejection from English football until now.

The 18-year-old defender's move from Bohemians to Wolves has finally gone through ending a story of disappointment in his previous attempts to break through over here.

"When I was 15 and 16 I'd been away at a few clubs with trials," said the Irish youngster.

"I've been before to Portsmouth, Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Derby and Charlton but it never worked out.

"Now it's probably the best time to get a move. I've since stayed at home working and got some experience for a year working for my Dad's carpet and upholstery cleaning business.

"It was good to get that experience but I've always wanted to be a footballer and getting the chance to come to Wolves was always going to be an easy decision.

"It's a dream to be here."

Doherty joins the ever growing Irish contingent at Molineux and has a direct role model to follow in his fellow former Bohs boy, Stephen Ward.

"I knew Stephen was here and had played for Bohs but I wasn't at the club when he was there," added Doherty.

"Following in his footsteps certainly gives me something to aim for."

Doherty has represented the Republic of Ireland at various junior levels but it was the pre-season friendly with Wolves which set the wheels in motion for his subsequent trial and signing.

"When I knew I was playing in the friendly against Wolves I knew it would be a chance to impress," he said.

"Bohs had played a game the night before so a few of us came into the team and I got a chance.

"I only played 55 minutes of the game and was marking Matt Jarvis. I thought I did ok against him because he's very quick and can go on both sides of you."
