The Venezuelan striker whipped a dead ball into the top corner during the first half of the FOX Sports Cup match to grab his first goal in the Baggies number nine shirt.

Chelsea loanee Nathan de Souza equalised for Arnhem just before the hour mark with a shot on the turn after Boaz Myhill had pushed away a deflected shot.

But McManaman scored what proved to be the winner around 20 minutes before the end after jinking inside the box and firing in off the inside of the post.

Head coach Tony Pulis named two different Albion sides for each half with another game against PSV Eindhoven on Saturday, but the Baggies still managed to control the majority of the match.

It was the first chance for Vitesse fans to see new manager new manager Henk Fraser at the GelroDome, and the former ADO Den Haag boss named a young side, leaving many of last season's first-teamers on the bench.

Arshak Koryan had the first shot of the match eight minutes in but his effort from distance drifted wide of Ben Foster's post.

But new Albion signing Matt Phillips had started brightly, and he took an incisive James Morrison ball in his stride before goalkeeper Jeroen Houwen smothered it at his feet.

Morrison nearly opened the scoring in spectacular fashion after 20 minutes, smacking the crossbar with an opportunistic looping 30-yard volley, as the Baggies took hold of the game..

Jonathan Leko was starting to cause trouble on the other wing, under the barking tutelage of Pulis, and the teenage trickster set up Rondon's goal in the 25th minute when he skipped inside three players and won a free-kick.

It was 25 yards out but the Venezuelan striker strolled up to the ball and belted an unstoppable shot into the top corner to put Albion in front.

The hosts were rarely troubling the Baggies but they came inches away from equalising in unusual circumstances just before half-time when Ben Foster picked up an inadvertent back-pass and the referee gave an indirect free-kick in the box.

Mohammed Osman's thunderbolt beat all 11 Albion players in the six-yard box but crashed against the underside of the bar and bounced clear of danger.

Pulis made wholesale changes two minutes after half-time with only Craig Dawson surviving.

It took a while for the new players to find their shape and Vitesse capitalised with an equaliser in the 57th minute.

Boaz Myhill did well to get hands to Marvelous Nakamba's initial deflected shot, but he could only push it towards Nathan, who fired in a low shot on the turn.

That woke the large Vitesse following behind the goal from their slumber but when McManaman found the inside of the post just over 10 minutes later it was the travelling Albion fans who then drowned out their hosts for the remainder of the game.

Saido Berahino nearly put a corner into his own net with a mistimed clearance in injury time, but the Baggies held on to the win.
