Saido Berahino will get better next season - and it could be for West Brom

Striker Saido Berahino has learned his lesson from this disappointing season and will come back stronger in August, according to West Brom head coach Tony Pulis.

The 22-year-old striker has only scored four Premier League goals in 2015-16 and spent a large portion of the campaign on the bench.

He was hot property last summer after bagging 20 goals last season, and Baggies chairman Jeremy Peace turned down four separate bids for the striker from Tottenham Hotspur. In January, he rebuffed advances from Newcastle and Stoke.

Berahino only has one year left on his contract and it's long been accepted at the club that he will be leaving this summer.

But his poor form in recent weeks has started to put off potential top-half suitors and now clubs like Watford and Crystal Palace are being linked with the striker.

Pulis is preparing for the possibility that the academy prospect will say no to a sideways move and stay at Albion for another season.

He commented: "Who says he's not going to sign another contract with us? I don't know, do you? Wait and see.

"The big thing with Saido is that he can wash away all the nonsense again. He's got the experience of dealing with people that just want to talk about his future all the time.

"The most important thing with Saido is that he concentrates on football. Whatever happens in the summer – if he comes back to this football club – he will have learned from last year.

"He's been given a gift, and that gift is playing football and not talking about it but doing it. If he leaves, he leaves, if he doesn't, he's had that experience and he's a better person for it."

Although many supporters feel Berahino's value has dropped this season, Peace played hard-ball with Spurs last summer and will not give up the club's prize asset cheaply.

If no team matches his price – believed to still be north of £20m – Berahino could be staying at the Hawthorns.

When Pulis was asked if Berahino could be a bargain for somebody this summer, he laughed and said: "I don't think my chairman does bargains!

"I know they're talking about it, but you come and work for my chairman, he doesn't do bargains."
