The club's £12 million record signing was forced to hobble off the pitch in the first half of Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Manchester City.

But the Venezuelan has been assessed at the training ground today and diagnosed with a minor back strain.

He is due to take part in training tomorrow and the club's medical team hope he will be fit enough to feature at The Hawthorns this weekend.

"I'm not sure which centre-half pulled him back, but he ripped his back," said Baggies boss Tony Pulis after the game.

"He couldn't move in the end. We'll see what he's like on Monday."
