The Dutch master, who died yesterday aged 68, was revered as a player during the same time Wile was playing for the Baggies in the 1970s and early 80s.

"His standing in the game was as big as it gets, at that time he was probably recognised in the same way that Messi is today," said Wile, who made 618 appearances for Albion.

"There were a lot of individually talented players in those days, and they were allowed to express themselves.

"That Holland team, they were excellent individuals, but they were also great team players.

"The very best players all have a humility about them, they are prepared to sacrifice themselves if they have to for the benefit of the team when the occasion was right, and Cruyff certainly came into the category."

But it was Cruyff's ability to then go on and become one of the most influential coaches in the world that, in Wile's opinion, sets him apart from other greats.

"He also left his mark as a coach with Barcelona, and I would guess that his legacy is even living on today in that part of the world," said the former centre-back.

"He had such a big impact as a coach that not just domestic football but world football was affected. That's something that's not been replicated."
