Albion's James Chester walking tall in land of the giants

Albion defender James Chester knows he's not tall enough for Tony Pulis to play at centre-back – but as long as he's in the team, he'll happily play anywhere.

The £8million summer signing has been used at right-back, centre-back and left-back in the last three games, having finally forced his way into the team. The 27-year-old is 5ft 11ins, whereas Jonny Evans, Gareth McAuley and Jonas Olsson are all 6ft-plus giants.

"I've seen the gaffer's teams all through the years, I know he likes a lot of height in the middle of the defence," said Chester. "As long as I'm in the team, I'm happy to play anywhere."

The former Hull defender is a centre-back by trade, and would prefer to play there if he could.

"That goes without saying, it's where I've played all my career," said Chester.

"Looking back at my time at Hull I think I only started four games at full-back.

"It's what my body is used to, it's what I've always known. I think I've shown against Peterborough – probably my best performance for West Brom – that is where I feel my best position is."

Injuries have given Chester a chance in defence, and after a few unsure performances at the start of the season, he's now getting better and better.

"That's what the gaffer said when he signed me, he'd use me all across the back four," said Chester.

"Full-back is fairly new to me, it's a difficult place to learn, but just to be out there playing after such a long time is nice.

"It took a couple of injuries to get in but I've been fairly pleased with how I've performed certainly against Newcastle, and in the week against Peterborough at centre-half I was really happy."

Albion have sold out their allocation of 4,000 tickets for Saturday's FA Cup fifth round tie at Reading.
