Danny Ings has been ruled out of the rest of the season with a serious knee injury, potentially paving the way for Albion's Saido Berahino to receive a call-up to the England squad for next year's European Championships.

The Liverpool forward suffered a cruciate ligament injury in his first training session with new manager Jurgen Klopp after making his England debut against Lithuania on Monday night.

The 23-year-old is out for the rest of the season and will be unavailable for Euro 2016 in France.

Berahino is yet to win a cap for England, although the 22-year-old has featured in all the youth teams and appeared 13 times for the under-21s.

England manager Roy Hodgson, who promoted Berahino into the first team at Albion, named the Burundi-born marksman in his squad for the Euro 2016 qualifier against Slovenia in November last year.

Berahino did not come on in either that game or a friendly with Scotland soon after and has not been named in the squad since with Harry Kane storming his way into Hodgson's thoughts last season.

The Albion striker is third on the all-time list of goalscorers for the national under-21 side with ten goals, behind Francis Jeffers and Alan Shearer, who both have 13.

Ings was taking part in a routine session at Liverpool's training ground in Melwood.

Joining from Burnley in the summer, the striker had netted three times in seven games this season, and scored his side's only goal in Liverpool's most recent game, a 1-1 draw with local rivals Everton.

The injury comes as another blow to Liverpool after full-back, Joe Gomez, ruptured his knee ligament this week playing for England under-21s. "It was not the best day in his life but he is a young guy and I am pretty good at waiting for players, young players especially," said Klopp.
