Boss Tony Pulis is keen to secure competitive games for Roberts and several of his youth-team colleagues.

And the Baggies boss would even consider a spell in non-league action for the youngsters including 16-year-old Roberts, who was called up to train with the senior Wales squad this summer.

Pulis said: "Wales have been impressed with Tyler when he's gone away and he's got the potential to be a good player.

"But we've got to try to get Tyler out to play some competitive games. I'm not a great fan of the games system within the academy.

"I don't think that gives them any real understanding of what professional football is.

"We will try to get our players out now as early as we possibly can, even if it means playing non-league football.

"If they have to drop down just to get the experience of playing in competitive football then so be it, because I don't think the games programme gives them any clue of how difficult it is to play professional football."

Defenders Shaun Donnellan and Jack Fitzwater both travelled to the United States for Albion's pre-season tour this summer.

Roberts and fellow 16-year-old forward Jonathan Leko went to Austria for the earlier training camp.

They could all be considered for loans along with older team-mates Liam O'Neil, who spent time at Scunthorpe last season, and Adil Nabi.

Striker Nabi was among the scorers as Albion's Under-21s started their Under-21 Premier League Division Two campaign with a 2-1 win at Swansea on Monday night.

His younger brother, midfielder Samir, netted the winner with just three minutes left on the clock at the Liberty Stadium.

Adil had spectacularly given the visitors an early lead with a precise free-kick from 30 yards.

The Swans hit back in the 21st minute through Ryan Hedges, who was able to turn inside the penalty area and slot a left-footed shot beyond the reach of goalkeeper Ethan Ross.

Boss James Shan said: "We are, obviously, really pleased to start with a win, especially here against a very good team like Swansea.

"It was a really resilient performance from the boys and we probably just did enough to deserve the three points.

"It wasn't our best performance, in terms of in possession of the ball, but we gradually got better towards the latter stages."
