Uruguay's Edinson Cavani was sent off during his side's Copa America defeat to Jara's Chile last night for striking the ex-Hawthorns defender in the face.

But replays appeared to show Jara provoke the clash then fall theatrically when Cavani retaliated.

Cavani was shown a second yellow card after being booked for dissent in the first-half.

After the incident changed the course of the game, QPR's Mauricio Isla hit a late winner for Chile to book their spot in the semi-final.

Jara is no stranger to controversy on the field, having appeared to grab the genitals of another Uruguay striker, Luis Suarez, during a World Cup qualifier in 2013.

Suarez also retaliated by appearing to punch Jara in the face but escaped punishment.

Uruguay boss Tabarez insisted Cavani was provoked.

He said: "You can see what happened and what the challenge was. I refer you to the television and photos of it, it is all there.

"I can see that the referee has not seen it, but the linesman had to be able to see it from his position."

Jara, who now plays for Mainz in Germany, made 67 appearances for Albion between 2009 and 2013.
