Joleon Lescott has called on Albion to "take a chance" by signing up to three high-calibre players this summer.

The former England man says the club must splash out for two or three first-team starters to avoid a third successive season of struggle.

Lescott has impressed for most of his debut season at The Hawthorns after swapping title-chasing at Manchester City for a relegation battle with Albion. But he says strong recruitment could restore the club to a mid-table spot.

"It is a well-run club – one of the best in the League – but to progress sometimes you may need to take a chance and just go out on a limb and get a calibre of player that ensures you are not down there," said the 32-year-old.

"If you sign players who improve the club and improve the team then I'm sure this club is not far away from being a mid-table team.

"Do we need many? I don't know. I just think it is down to quality.

"If you can get two or three quality players then that is good.

"That's true with any team – two or three would be great for any team if you sign players who are going to start next season.

"No disrespect to the players who started this season that have been good enough, but they go down into your squad and that is how you improve."

The Baggies look virtually safe from relegation with 37 points ahead of tomorrow's trip to Manchester United and boss Tony Pulis is already plotting a major overhaul of his squad for next season.

Lescott said: "The club's ambition was to stay in the League and I think we can do that, but to go forward you need to progress.

"You've got to look at the likes of the top teams like Chelsea. I'm sure they will strengthen and they could win the League so we've got to be no different.

"Every team next season knows how important it will be to stay in the League so we need to sign players that can enhance the team."
