Albion starlet Saido Berahino targets new Hawthorns deal

Old Trafford match-winner Saido Berahino today confirmed he wants to sign a new contract after Albion opened talks over an extended deal.

Berahino is currently on around £850 a week but his new deal would see his salary rocket to 20 times that figure.

And after the 2-1 victory over the defending Premier League champions, the home-grown Albion striker predicted he will agree an extension to his current deal, which has nine months to run plus a further year's option in the Baggies' favour.

"We are talking," said Berahino. "It is between me and the club to sort it out and soon something will be done.

"We've just got to wait. I have been here since I was 11. It feels like all my life. It's a great club and they have brought me on and educated me well, so why not stay?"

Berahino capped an historic afternoon for Albion with the 67th-minute winner after Morgan Amalfitano's stunning 54th-minute opener was cancelled out just three minutes later by Wayne Rooney's free-kick.

The goal maintained a dream chain of events for the Burundi-born youngster, who netted a hat-trick on his full debut against Newport County in the Capital One Cup in August, scored again in the next round against Arsenal and was on target twice in two games for England Under-21s.

He said: "I hadn't played there before, it was my first time, but I didn't get fazed by it.

"I've had experience playing on big stages because a couple of years ago I went away to the Under-20s World Cup and played in front of big crowds. I just enjoyed myself."

Head coach Steve Clarke said: "I'm not surprised by his progress but I am delighted. I saw the signs last summer of how good he can be."

We sent him out on loan, he got injured and had a difficult time coming back.

"But he came into the squad and he's been impressive.

"My job now is to manage him and keep his feet on the ground but he has a big future in the game if he keeps doing what he's doing."
