West Bromwich Albion teenager George Thorne urged to make the step up

West Bromwich Albion teenager George Thorne was today challenged to prove his Premier League pedigree by cashing in on the Baggies’ midfield injury crisis.

The 19-year-old was in the squad to face Manchester United at Old Trafford this afternoon after being recalled from his eye-catching loan spell at Peterborough.

And, with Claudio Yacob and Youssouf Mulumbu currently sidelined by hamstring problems and Mulumbu set to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations in early January, assistant boss Keith Downing has challenged Thorne to step up.

Downing said: “We have always felt George had the potential to do it but, with the progress of our club, his chances have been limited.

“But I have seen a progression in him recently.

“He is more of a man now, he has more experience and knowledge of the game.

“He understands the game now but that only comes from playing real football at Peterborough.

“He’s a young boy looking to establish himself in the game and it has been a really important part of his education to play in real, Championship football.”

'The Class of 68'

George we're all behind you

The Baggies have produced many top half backs come midfield players over the years. I just hope we are still talking about you in years to come, i wish you well.

My personal favourite was Graham Lovett, he had everything, skill on the ball, heading a ball, attacking flair, defensively astute, distribution, the lot.

Unfortunately a shocking accident with many months out of the game took it's toll, he was never the same Graham Lovett of old.

Any road up ..... George i hope your given a start ..... COYB

Bromham Baggie

Agree fully. Re GLI only saw him post accident and I still reckon he was better than Bryan Robson. Robson only broke his leg(s) Lovett broke his back.

Brummie roader Ryan

Can he step up to the premier league?

I'm not so sure yet.

He seems to go missing a lot in games but lets hope he improves

Good luck today lads we will need it !

Class of 68, i remember watching Graham Lovett play local chap wasn't he, was it a car accident. There was another local about the same time, had a couple of bad injuries and never quite the same player, was it Hughes. Is Thorne a local lad. COMTW.
