Roy Hodgson losing patience with Peter Odemwingie

West Brom boss Roy Hodgson today hinted he is losing patience with Peter Odemwingie after revealing the striker could miss Saturday’s clash with Tottenham.

The Baggies head coach revealed his growing frustration with the Nigeria international, who could be missing again at the weekend with a knee injury that was expected to clear up a fortnight ago.

Odemwingie, who netted 15 goals in his debut Premier League season, has failed to find his best form since a summer which saw him sign a big-money new Hawthorns contract.

And Hodgson hinted he is annoyed with the 30-year-old not “playing through the pain” of his injury problems.

“I’m frustrated because we’ve got nothing out of him this year,” said Hodgson. “He didn’t take part in many of the pre-season matches and he hasn’t taken part in many of the matches since then. It’s been one problem after another. For a player who we really put so much into in the hope that he will be our major force for staying in the Premier League, we have not had a return on that at the moment.”

I find this story a little disturbing. It’s unusual for a manager to express his disquiet
so openly. Thank goodness Shane and Zoltan clicked so efficiently. MAF and Bednar won’t be going anywhere for the time being and perhaps Simon Cox will get the opportinity he deserves.

For a lot of wrking class folk who support the Albion me being one of them it’s hard to understand not running through a brick wall for 40K a week. That’s more money than the average man in the street earns in a year. I think the problem with PO was highlighted by the fact that Shane Long battled back from a cracked bone in his knee in 4 weeks and put in the display that he did last weekend. I’m worried about the PO and Hodgson rift as it is there to be seen. A fit mentally right PO is as good as anything in the Premier League but IMO he needs to see a sports psychiatrist and sort his head out because reading between the lines it appears to be a mental thing. I rate PO and am gratefull for what he has done for us but he was given what is for a club like ours a kings ransom and at present is not repaying that.

This has been coming for a couple of weeks. Roy has made some ‘hidden’ comments about PO over the last couple of weeks such as ‘when HE declares himself fit, now he has made it more blatent!! Surely if the medical staff declare him fit then he is fit.
It is clearly a mental thing with PO, we found that out last year when he was seeing a psychiatrist.
I would imagine this is Roy trying to get a reaction from him. My only concern here though is if he is mentally weak then the reaction to these comments might not be a positive one.
Hopefully he sorts himself out because a fit PO and Long would be immense for the squad.
Worst case scenario, he has 2 1/2 years on his contract so sell for a nice little profit which will keep Mr Chairman very happy.

I can see where Roy is coming from but I also think that we need to be careful not to read too much into this story. Roy may well be frustrated and disappointed but I don’t read personal rift or anger into this. It would be interesting to get Peter to the press conference and ask him what his views are, rather than fill more column inches with hot air.
I agree with Romsley that a fit and well Odemwingie is as good as anything; and it was only a few weeks ago he scored against the Wolves.
The good thing is that Long has performed well since joining and that gives Odemwingie time to recover properly.
James Morrison took forever to recover from his heal injury. Some things take longer than others to get right enough to play again and sometimes the risk of coming back too soon is not worth taking.

Albion should just cut thier losses and get
rid in the January transfer window,
I honestly believe Jeremy Peace is kicking himself for not selling him in the
summer for that 8M Wigan offered.
If Roy Hodgson wants a replacement then he
could do a lot worse than go for someone like
Nicky Maynard, Ive watched him playing for
Bristol City and he seems to have everything
    Odemwingie has and more.

    4) We knew he was prone to injury before offering him his new contract, he missed several games last season, so I don’t understand what the problem is. Even with the “woo is me injuries exscuse” straight out of Laughinwolfs text book, he still managed to out shine anything at the Reds Row (and most other teams) last season, and I have no reason to see why he wont do it again this season. Just giving the rest of the strikers in the division their annual head start.

No.8. Good point I think Roy’s frustration is the fact that the medical team can’t find anything wrong with Peter, but he seems to be telling them he isn’t fit ! I’m a big fan of PO but if he carries on this way on big wages he is going to cause discontent amongst the other players who are prepared to put in the effort. Needs sorting.

Need to remember that Peter is 30 not 20 – injuries take longer to heal and its harder to play through them at that age. That said I trust Roy amd the staff to judge his fitness and if they think he is fit they should chuck him on.

We all know Pete has to have his head right to play and the club will need to sort him out – but i wouldn’t swap him and his goals for a 2nd division player like Maynard just yet.

Not once has “Hodgson hinted he is annoyed with the 30-year-old not playing through the pain”.

I can’t believe our luck with Odemwingie to be honest he was a revolation last season then you have the headlines that the top teams are interested and nothing comes of it then the player seems to think that he can do what he likes because he thinks he’s bigger than the club, I’m sorry but the games Odemwingie have played he looked fit enough for me but he lacked his usual sharpness at times but he needs games to get that back, he scored a great goal against Wolves and was very unlucky to have his goal against Villa ruled out to because IMO it was a perfectly good goal so he can score goals he still has them in him, I’m just hoping this isn’t to get a move away come january because it sure does look like it.

Odemwingie and Long parnership is a mouth watering attack but yet we are still waiting for it to come into fruition, I really liked Odemwingie last season but like Hodgson I’m loosing patience too.

The point is that our medical team allegedly can’t find anything wrong with PO so what is the reason for all these injuries and absence from the first team? If i was the manager and i had a player on my hands who was behaving in this way regardless of their ability i would also be getting frustrated. Maybe Roy has tried the arm around the shoulder tactic and it’s getting him no-where so he is trying the kick up the backside approach? After all PO best form last season came off the back of sitting on the bench after his home display against the Wolves and sat on the bench Stoke away which we drew. Then he was again on the bench for Blues away and came on at half time or just after we won 3-1 and he missed an open goal! Then through hard work forced and work ethic on the pitch earned his place until the end of the season and scored another half a dozen goals or so along the way in a decent set of results. Just a thought.

From the displays he has turned in this season for whatever reason IMO although i rate him highly it quite simply hasn’t consistantly been good enough.

Sir Terry used to go fishing for Wolves fans before saying ‘that’s another one in the keepnet.’ I think the E&S do the same thing, I often check out the Wolves site and they seem to do it even more on there than they do on here. A recent headline was ‘Jez Moxey says Wolves fans are fickle.’ Now disregarding what you think of the statement. The headline is an abbreviated version of what he actually said suitably phrased to cause a storm of protest against a person who is unpopular with Wolves fans anyway.

Have a look at the recent stories over there, read the headline and then the actual story and you will see what I mean. Supporters are ever ready to pick up half truths and rumours, add a bit to them from their own imagination and like a good relay runner pass on the baton.

30 Macca have a chill pill mate everyone is entitled to their opinion mate just because you don’t agree with them doesn’t make them planks, are you calling Hodgson a plank too because this information has come from him and he has also lost confidence in Odemwingie’s injury problems, I would absolutely love to see him playing and so would 99% of Albion fans but the fact is he’s not and that is frustrating for us all, he never had an injury with his hand signing his new contract deal in the summer even though his injury problems started before then all the club is asking is for him to put himself out there like the others are in the team because it will eventually cause problem in the dressing room otherwise. It’s great having a 15 goal a season striker in your team but he might aswel be a 3 goal a season striker if he’s not playing.

Well that’s my opinion anyway you don’t have to like it.

I support him 100% whilst he’s playing and when he’s injured but doubt’s have been raised and so i’m frustrated in him like many others.

Having spoken to a reliable source…..

Roy isnt annoyed as such with PO. However he and the medical staff have watched in awe as Shane worked extremely hard to get back to full fitness. By all accounts SL efforts in the hydrapool to keep his fitness while still carrying the injury were remarkable.

What Roy is frustrated with is that he wants to see his players giving 100% to recovering. I am no expert in the subject, i studied dietary rehabilitation at Uni and did do some work with quite a few professional injured sports men and women. The idea that when a player or athlete is injured they are sitting at home with their feet up is usually in most cases pretty far from the truth. Injury rehabilitation depending of course on the injury usually involves a great deal of work.

From what i have been told, Roy is more concerned with POs application to recovering from injury.
However, from what i have been told this is no different to the way PO responded last year to his niggling injuries.
So the fact he has signed a new contract in the summer is neither here nor there.

I understand what you mean in that we need everybody ‘at it’, but that’s not enough in this league as we’ve found out before, you need quality too and the right balance, and PO certainly brings us quality we’d struggle to replace with whatever amount we sold him for. I see that Pete has taken a picture of the injury, that still shows a large accumulation of fluid in his leg,and has said that despite this,he trained with the squad yesterday.

His 15 goals last season made the difference between us staying up,or getting relegated, and if we’d gone down, the club would have lost many, many more millions than the amount he’s getting paid.
And so far this season, his 2 goals in 6 games is a similar average to last term,he’s already helped us to get valuable points.

As for how good he is?-

well so far,he’s played one full season for us,and won the ‘Premiership Player of the month’ award TWICE,not just more times than any other Albion player, but more times than ANYONE else in the country.

But I’m sure some people will always want to just focus on the negative stuff.

    (AKA the wolves ‘armchair’ fan)-

the reason you dislike Pete is that he’s an Albion hero, and scored in the last two games against your beloved wolves.

    You remember wolves,don’t you?-

It’s the club you watch on TV every week…..

    The Real Bully Hoo.

I really can’t belive that PO is now becoming the new Scott Carson/James Morrison on the strength of the bloke having an injury and a few tabloid stories doing their usual trick of being economical with the truth taken from an interview with RH. Some days I have to check the heading to make sure I’m on the right site.

I’ve followed the debate between Warren and Baggie Dad with interest. I have to say I don’t remember too many people saying that PO needs to ‘apply’ himself more last season. If he wants a move in January then not playing is a pretty dumb way to go about it. Don’t compare him with Shane Long, the injuries are different and Shane has youth on his side which makes a tremendous difference.

Then we get onto whether he’s a quality player or not. Real quality players usually have at least one outstanding quality PO’s being his pace and natural finishing. The thing to ask is would a player have a chance of getting into a top international team and with PO I think the answer is probably yes and if we take off our blue and white specs I don’t think this applies to too many other of our players.

The real telling point though Baggie Dad is that Post 60 ‘Thick As A’ said your post was one of the best he’d seen on here, coming from a person who hates everything Albion that should make you seriously reassess your view.

    65 Bully,

    you’re right,post 60 IS ‘as thick as a….’.

    But he’s no Jethro Tull.

More like someone I often see when I’m down in Brighton,Devon-

    ‘Jethro,the village idiot’.
