Albion in talks over Ben Foster move
Thursday 21st July 2011, 12:00PM BST.
Albion wrapped up their United States tour today with a win as boss Roy Hodgson confirmed the club are in talks over signing Ben Foster.
Reports suggest Birmingham could allow the goalkeeper to move on loan.
Boss Hodgson confirmed discussions have been held between the clubs over the 28-year-old former England international, who is the Baggies’ top goalkeeping target.
And sources close to St Andrew’s today claimed Blues will release Foster on loan for the season to remove him from their wage bill as they count the cost of relegation to the Championship.
Hodgson said: “I am aware of our interest in Ben Foster but I am not aware of how far down the line we are with our negotiations with Birmingham, so I can’t make any comments on that.
“But Ben Foster is a goalkeeper who interests us and, if we can get him to West Bromwich Albion on loan or on a permanent deal, that would be something we would be very happy about.”

Smart move, takes the urgency out of our way, and if Birmingham are promoted they still have a fist class keeper. Suits everybody.

Hope it can be a permenant deal as I do rate him quite highly. But in saying that maybe that will give us more clout in other areas.
If we sign Ben Foster and Owen Hargreaves then I can’t fault the board one bit.

1.5 mil loan fee with view to permanent signing at end of season for 4.5

There is a God…… SIGN HIM UP!!!
This would be a great signing for you. I rate him very highly. Way better than Green
Report abuse
If we can get him brilliant!
3 – this is how we do business, sign on loan to avoid tax issues but make the contract binding so we can have him permanently next summer.
Also like to see Hargreaves on a pay-as-you-play deal because if he’s fit then we’d have one of the best central midfielders in the league.
No thanks to Shane Long though, £8m is way too much for a Championship striker and I wouldn’t put him in the same bracket as Odemwingie, Tchoyi or Cox so I hope we find another suitable European striker to fill the void left by the AFCN in the new year.
Wolves fan in peace! I think Hargreaves is a massive gamble. I know he is on pay as you play but he is not going to be a a stupidly low “basic pay” anyway. Probably £10k plus £15k for verey match he plays maybe? Just a guess, I am probably way of the mark but you get my drift.

If we get Foster it is a definate step in the right direction, he has prooved his worth at Watford and Blues respectively.
Im a bit worried about the lack of defensive cover but in Roy i trust.
For a giggle has anyone read about Roger Johnsons wife ? she says :
“He (Roger)could have held out for a bigger club. Lot’s of people expected that
Love it, maybe he was hoping for Crewe to put a bid in !!
Sounds great – a year long loan will suit Blues but will also take Foster a year closer to the end of his contract and so reduce his value…. and lets face it, after playing at the shrine he aint gonna want to go back there is he !!!!
Also keeps a bit more cash available for Shane Long…… could be another JP master stroke !!!
Aimed at 1)Baggie by the way as I know this thread is about Foster before I get berated as a thick Dingle !

and still got a full piggy bank for any late surprise bargains….Happy days! whilst other teams spend out on one player, and now have their fans in uproar because they still need this and they still need that, and so have to start a fire sale just to balance the books! Maybe we should put our financial nous forward to the Bank Of England!

11) still think Hargreaves is well worth the risk, i have faith in our physios and if he was fit what a signing. If he breaks down again well so be it.A little gamble here and there is good for you

It will be a great bit of business if it comes off,but the deals being knocked out these days can be complicated,,so I just want to hear an official announcement that he’s signed before getting carried away.
Let’s just hope that whoever’s in goal next season get’s everyone’s full support.
I heard this rumour a few weeks ago, Foster on loan with a view to a permenant, if Blues come back up he goes back, if we stay up and Blues stay down it turns into a permenant deal. This makes perfect sense. I would be well happy with Foster, fingers crossed this happens.
On Shane Long i think 8M is too much money although i like him as a player, lively, quick and knows where the net is. I think 5- 6M tops is enough for Long bearing in mind he is not proven at prem level and only has a year left on his contract.
As for Hargeaves it’s a no brainer as DA puts it. If we can get him on our terms on a pay as you play deal and it works we have a world class midfielder on our hands on the right terms, if it doesn’t work there is no great financial risk to us.
I just wish we would get these deals done im going stir crazy with no football! Come on you Baggie boys!
I hope this gets wrapped up, I’d like Foster, not sure he’s faultless but he’s a good keeper for a club like us and he’s the man most seem to want. If we got Green, can’t help judging by a few reactions I’ve heard, there’d be another Carson situation in the making i.e. people waiting for the first clanger.
Had a wander onto a couple of Portland Timbers websites, there are some absolute corkers on there:
‘The Baggies wrapped up their 3-game pre-season tour of western US with a 2-1-0 mark’
‘speedy play from Nagbe and Zizzo opened things up for the Portland offense’
followed by, on some local newspaper forums:
‘What do they feed those boys in West Bromwich? They looked like they do nothing but eat steak, run sprints and lift weights’
then a lengthy debate between posters on how many teams get promoted FROM the Premier League……
Report abuse
Great signing if you can get him, always thought Green was no better than Carson, so if you can !!!! pull it off great bit of business
Report abuse
13) I initially was against Hargreaves when I first heard him mentioned, as I did say we didn’t want a O Hara, or to be carrying passengers. However, on reflection a play and pay set up could be a very good solution all round. After all, with the best medical team in the Prem last season (official, Albion was the club least troubled by injuries in the 2010-11 Premier League season, we lost only 432 days to player-injuries throughout the season, and before you ask no it wasn’t, contrary to what they would have you believe, it was Sunderland with 2001 days lost), our sports science department must be top notch too!, if anyone can fix him, we can!
7. LMS – in this case I don’t believe it would be a tax benefit approach – simply believe it’s Blues want to offload Foster’s wages for a season and retain the player for the following season should they get promoted at the first attempt. As stated above the likely outcome would be a fee will be agreed now to take him permanent in the summer should Blues fail to get promoted and we were to stay up again.
Am I the only one who can’t get excited about Shane Long? Can’t say I’ve been massively bowled over by what I’ve seen of him over the past 3/4 seasons (admittedly only via WBA v Reading games/ TV coverage). Also read somewhere that his goalscoring ratio is currently 1 in 4…….considering most of his appearances have come at Championship level it doesn’t really inspire. As for the amounts of £8m+ being thrown around – crazy!
If Foster is valued at 9 mill and we get him on a 5 year deal thats 1.8 mill a year over 5 years, So 1 year at 1 mill makes perfect sense and it helps the cash flow
Hargreave’s is worth a gamble if it don’t work we can bring in someone else at christmas. But our medical boys seem to have a good track record with this type of player.
A fit Hargreaves at the top of his game is worth 15-20 mill which we don’t have. These
oppertunity’s dont come round to often we have to take it
Shane long as ive said before at 8 mill walk away stick with what we have (although i hpoe we can off load Miller)
He looked good behind Johnson.
9)Chris 5 ways, reading the wags comments and giggling.Whatever floats your boat.

This would be awesome. Also I’d like to see Nickolas Bentner come if he’s still available.
Re Shane Long, he looks a decent player but as everyone states, 8m is way way too much. Regardless of the price, one benefit of signing him would be to increase our chances of beating Reading in the FA Cup this year!
Warren – loving the US match reports of the Albion too. I played college football in the States, well “soccer”, and their footballing vocabulary was comical. I remember one of our match reports talked about a “spike ball into the PK area.”
Calling the refs ‘sir’ was something I could never get used to…
Report abuse
Try before you buy is always good to do with ‘keepers.

Hope we get him, i reckon his signing could make the difference between relagation and staying up, or maybe the different between top and bottom half of the table.
With dorrans back, tchoyi proving himself, we have a nice healty midfield and strikeforce. Id like to see a top class defender next. No clean sheets in the us games AGAIN !
I’m sure i read hargreaves was off to canada though ? if not……..
I think if albion were savvy here they could sign him on a 2, maybe 3 year deal, get his health and fitness sorted and then punt him on for a nice bit of profit ! pay as you play would mean the second hes proven hes fit he’ll be off anyway !
Regarding Hargreaves, given what we have done with JT and GB in recent times I do have faith in our current medical set up to make this work for us. If he signes, hopefully Hargreaves will prove to be more motivated than GB proved to be.
22)23) I have been saying it for weeks, Long is over priced, to my mind, and I could be wrong, he is more on a par with Danny Graham, who’s price of 3.5 mill mark is much nearer the mark. I still say on proven ability (although he has had some ropey seasons too) based on last season alone, DJ Campbell is the best value out there, by far. Go find another player who has “recently” scored 13 goals in a Prem season around the price he is likely to go for? You will be searching for a very, very long time!
I agree with comments about Hargreaves (can’t bring myself to call him Hargo as the press seem to like doing)… if he is fit he will be awesome and its well worth 2.5k a week to find out.
I think Shane Long is a great prospect – but 8 million is too much – 5/6 would seem more realistic but its JP’s call (can’t believe we may be accusing JP of spending too much money…..)
I still have a feeling we may see Carlton Cole – possibly on a similar loan deal to Foster – and that would be a good shout !!!
Remember Dan Ashworth’s comments last week about possibly looking at a foreign keeper… the lesson is don’t believe ANYTHING until its done !!!

9 Chris-
re: Johnson’s wife, when she said ‘he could have held out for a bigger club’,what she means is that he waited a couple of months, but no one else made an offer.
So because Blues wouldn’t lower the asking price any further,he could either go to wolves or stay at Blues in the championship.
No sour grapes, but I honestly feel Albion and other clubs would have only been interested if 2 or 3 million had been knocked off his value.

let’s hope this rumour on foster becomes reality.he would be a great signing.hargreaves too is well worth a pay as you play deal.its onlt a gamble as far as the squad numbers go.
i agree with almost everyone too, shane long is not worth 8 million.weve much better players than him already in cox, miller, wood, tchoyi etc
we need to get a top notch centre half, thats the most important type of player we need.weve a very good midfield, very good striker force and hopefully a top notch keeper coming.just add a centre half and we will have another good season.

p.s. as a Englishman, was only behind Darren Bent in the Prem top scorers, remind me, Bent went for how much? 18 million was it? and we are umming and erring over triggering a 1.25 mill release clause! is it me?

Would be a good move if we could get Foster on loan. Let’s hope JP takes the padlock off his wallet to sanction the deal.
No to Owen Hargreaves despite some of you saying we have the best medical team in the world.
It sounds like the opening credits to The Six Million Dollar Man. We can rebuild him, doo, doo, doo, doo. We will give him bionic knees, doo, doo, doo, doo. My 90 year old grandmother has better knees than him and I will fly her over tomorrow to slot into our midfield for a couple of hundred a week and a bag of wurthers original. Should fit into JP’S budget.
G DAY.

Well if Hargreaves is only on £2.5k a week if he doesn’t play thats WELL worth a gamble but I thought he would be on at least 4 times that. If people know the figures though thats fair enough, its a very good deal. Still a player out of the 25 if he doesn’t play though.

Let’s start with a positive spin on the potential signing of Ben Foster. After all SC was given 3 years support before people started getting on his back albiet a minority. Some of the stick he took was unfair and disproportionate but he wasn’t blameless in all the stick he took. He has moved on so i think we need to move on now man. If were serious about him it should be a done deal within the next week.
The loan deal would also be a very wise, business savvy move.
Agree with the post 9 – Chris5Ways
I think defence is still an area to improve on, I know pre-season results mean nothing but clean sheets seem to still be illusive.
As the club says we only need tweaking/slightly improving so I hope the few quality signings Hodgson talks about will be the basic spine of a team:
GK Foster
A proven CB (Ridgewell fits the bill)
ST Robbie Keane
And would be nice to see Hargreaves and or one of our usual speciality forren gems, preferably an attacking midfielder.

36. Wonoh, what gives you the idea that ‘we are umming and erring’ over signing DJ?
Perhaps he IS a target, I dont know, do you? But if he is perhaps we are umming and erring about signing a BETTER Striker? What’s think?
46) Well the fact we haven’t had the remotest connection to him suggested makes me think we are umming and erring, by your logic we are connected with any player in the world who has not been mentioned, Ronaldo, Kaka, Tevez, because it has not been mentioned, but what are the chances? So, based on that I would suggest no, he is not a target.

Foster deal would be awesome!!! If loan makes it work then go for it – Cant see Blues getting back up with their fire sale and money troubles so it will become perm anyway!
Hargreaves – get him if its right with the pay as you play ( Why isnt he training with us rather than planning a meeting!!! – Lets have a look at him first and if he looks semi fit then talk! )
Long – My first choice all season for numerous reasons, mainly the fact he is like Odem and an all-rounder that can play on his own / in a two / enough pace but has strength as well, finishes etc.
As for being overvalued as you all keep on – He is only overvalued if we bought him at £8m – which we never will.
Reading just want that amount for him now. I think you will find the price will come down to around £4m plus add ons by end of August with him having 1 year left. It will then be classed as Undisclosed fee to protect everyone.
It will then just be a case of if he comes to us or elsewhere.

Sorry for mentioning that bloke’s name, it’s a slip on my part. I am being positive and I really hope we get Foster.
All I meant- and this applies to all players in all positions, not just a keeper- is that when we’re linked with someone, we all get a feel for that player, have an opinion and general warmth/apathy towards a player from the off. For example Odemwingie, we all liked him from game one. Others, Phil Whitehead springs to mind, found it harder to win the crowd over because he was following the reasonably successful Alan Miller.
Whoever follows, err you know, will I’m sure be given a bit of a chance. But I detect a lot more warmth towards the Foster deal than to the Green one and as such think it’d be better for the club and for us all if we got him.

Keeper and a striker yes, but only 2 clean sheets all last season (1 of which was a lucky one) indicate that we still also need to address the defence.

Blues are not in a mess because they won the Carling Cup.
They are in a mess because the club isn’t run by a fit and proper organisation. Big Ec had motivational issues with the players post the cup final. I’d be worried if I was a Villa fan.
Neither JP or Roy Hodgson are that naive or disorganised to allow that to happen.

I gather you’re one of Mick’s supporters?
I only mention it,because last season,I had a look at what wolves fans had to say on the match report of several games, and in truth,it was quite embarrassing to see the level of abuse being directed towards your manager.
At times, there were in excess of a hundred posts telling Mick he was useless, didn’t have a clue, should resign,or the club should have kicked him out long ago.
In view of the fact that wolves avoided the drop (just about),and you’ve recently signed Johnson from Blues,it made me laugh the other day when I read the thread about Mick’s 5th. anniversary.
Every wolves fan was saying what a fantastic guy Mick is,and what a brilliant job he’s done down the old mol. Some were absolutely gushing with praise.
So tell me,is the first requirement of being a wolves fan the ability to move in the same direction as the wind, knowing that today you could be going the opposite way to where you were happy to go yesterday?

Hope you kept the lumberjack shirt, hard hat,and chainsaw.
All the girls like a man in uniform, equipped with such a big weapon.

Max,
my first reply seems to have turned up here over half an hour later than I sent it.
Am I in a different time zone to other people?
Are you seeing the same as me?
Am I invisible?

82) I promise you, if you signed Messi, not only would I congratulate you, I would eat my hat, and yours too, but seeing has that will never happen, I feel my digestive tract is safe, for now.
83) I do apologies, I thought it was now common knowledge, and well documented, from several sources, and, stated by Mick himself, that your club wouldn’t be buying anymore players, and you were having to off load ones you already have, just to balance the wage book of your “new” signings, that sounds to me like a team with no more money to spend, perhaps you would care to enlighten me to what you know different?

Iknow i maybe the only one on here who wants to keep Miller but i watched the game against the timbers and he changed the game when he came on they could’nt handle him with his pace and power ,he held the ball up well and got some shots in if Uncle Roy can do his magic with him he could be like a new player .I also believe Tchoyi is going to be a star this season.

I think you should look again. Yes there are idiots in the Wolves camp that just don’t seem to understand what has happened at Wolves over the last 5 years compared to the previous twenty five. I won’t name them on here, but, there the same bunch. You got similar morons too, who seem to think it’s all about spending millions on players half of them have never even seen(although I will admit, not as many) IMO Most Wolves fans are behind the 3Ms
Was disappointed with the first paragraph of your 63 post. You lowered yourself to the JtH and Sir terry levels.
Banter yes, debate yes, but not Slagging off.
Cyril. Well spotted, I blame my keyboard.

I find it very amusing.
A wolves fan,Chris, comes over here and said we’re signing injured ‘has-beens’.
I reply to him, using accurate information.
You then accuse me of ‘slagging’ players off,but say nothing about Chris’ comments.
Excuse me if this gives the impression that you’re more than a little biased towards wolves.
But then we already know this, don’t we?

To continue Cyril’s theme of words and meanings, please see the below correct usage of the English language.
Their is the possessive form indicating belonging to them. You should only use this when you are indicating possession to a group. Look at the examples below.
The children all ate their sandwiches.
The soldiers polished their rifles.
The Greek people are justifiably proud of their beautiful country.
The passengers complained that the airline had lost their luggage.
There is the place, i.e. not here.
It is also used when saying ‘there is’ and ‘there are’.
Put those books over there please.
I found the old shoes in there.
There are thousands of stars visible from Earth.
There is soot all over the new carpet.
They’re is the contracted form of “they are”. Remember that abbreviations like this should not be used in essays and other formal writing. They are fine in reported speech.
‘They’re all going to the cinema this evening,’ said Paul’s mum.
‘I can’t see where they’re coming from!’ he yelled.
‘They’re waiting for you in the interview room.’
‘Do you know where they’re going to be this afternoon?’
I hope this fills in one of the many aspects of schooling that you clearly missed.
Come on you Baggies

You’re so wrong.
There are two of us. I’m constantly asking people to give him a chance when he’s injury free and then allow the real experts at the club to decide his future. He falls into the easy targets category.

So the emphasis is on the use of the word There, in case you didn’t notice.
