Price must be right for Odemwingie
Wednesday 27th April 2011, 11:31AM BST.
Albion boss Roy Hodgson has insisted it would take a mega-bucks offer to prise striking sensation Peter Odemwingie out of the Hawthorns this summer.
Hodgson is determined to keep the Baggies’ 13-goal leading scorer despite the prospect of summer bids following the Nigeria international’s stunning debut Premier League season.
Italian club Juventus have been linked with a possible Odemwingie bid, but Hodgson said: “He’s a good player and we would like to keep him here. Whether we receive any offers or not, who can say?
“But I’m not sure there’s an awful lot of money around. Certainly we wouldn’t be looking to get rid of him, so it would have to be the type of offer you can’t refuse and we know what top front players cost in the market.
“I’m not suggesting £50million but they certainly cost top money, so it would be a question of what teams are out there with that sort of money to spend and whether Peter Odemwingie is the type of player they are looking for, so there are a lots of ifs and buts.
“I don’t take a lot of notice of the Juventus thing. Any agent in the world can always drum up an Italian club.
“If we’re going to lose the best ones we’ve got and start again then I would think the task is going to be more than uphill.
“No-one wants to be in that situation.”
Hodgson also backed Odemwingie to ignore any summer speculation surrounding his future.
The Baggies boss said: “He’s not stupid. He seems perfectly happy here and he’s a joy to work and I think he has enjoyed his time here.
“I don’t think he’s looking to take the first opportunity to get out of the club.
“I don’t talk him about those things, so it’s not something I should talk too much about.
“I have no idea what players think when they read things in the papers.”

I have no doubt that St Peter will be here next season – but I would be much happier if he signed a new extended contract… 5 years should do !!
Seriously though – what price Peter in todays market ?? Ignore the Torres fee cos thats daft – but Andy Carrol at 35Million and Darren Bent at 24million must put PO in the 20mill bracket – and I still hope we don’t sell !!
Staying in this division, the asking price is top dollar, unlike being relegated, when players want to leave a club. That club has to sell to the cherry pickers, or be left with a disgruntled players on their hands. I would definitely like him to stay, but we are in a no lose situation. I’m going over old ground, but every player has a price.

Why would he want to leave? This guys is not stupid, he is adored by the fans after his time in Russia don’t underestimate this in his thinking. He is happy and has repeatedly stated this, JP will undoubtedly offer improved terms 3 more years with a year in the clubs favour i would anticipate? We are building a team and don’t historically sell anyone we want to keep unless we get top dollar. If he does leave which i think is highly unlikely don’t be surprised if the fee is anything between 20 – 25 Million which we all know is a ridiculous ammount of money for him but as ever it will be on our terms. Just food for thought, if a new deal can’t be struck he is under contract for another 2 years min probably with a year in our favour. I honestly believe he will be rewarded though as he should be and stay at the mighty baggies.

Not all doom & gloom on the dark side…. laughing wolf has finally re-surfaced and after his usual obligatory mention of injuries (yawn) he says that they will kick start their relegation battle at blues in front of 4200 travelling wolves fans.
Now seeing how they took less than 2000 to their staffordshire local derby game with Stoke I just wondered where these extra 2500 fans were coming from – made me laugh!!
See.. not all doom & gloom.

I’d flog him.
TBH we won’t get anywhere near £20m – the guy’s 29, closing in on 30, not in his early 20′s like Bent or Carroll – so let’s not kid ourselves there.
But £10m to £15m is a reasonable expectation.
We could do a lot with that sort of money.
SuperMaths
Like get relegated??? Look what’s happened to Wolves without Doyle. That lone striker is crucial in a 4-5-1/4-3-3 and lets not kid ourselves, without Odemwingie’s goals and all-around contribution we’d be right in the thick of it.
Also, £15m, what does that get you in today’s market? Valero, Zuiverloon, Luke Moore and Leon Barnett??? It doesn’t guarantee anything, losing PO would. I’d say do everything to make sure he’s here next year.
Never posted on here before but regularly enjoy reading others pearls of wisdom – and to see what the one and only LaughingWolf comes up with next of course…
I don’t think Odemwingie will be going anywhere, the players will all know what Hodgson did at Fulham and will be desperate to emulate it. Pete only needs to have a look at some of those that have gone on to ‘bigger and better things’ (Big Time Curtis, Jonno, Kamara etc) to see that Albion is where he needs to be – why go somewhere to possibly sit on the bench all season when he fits our style of play perfectly and is universally loved by the fans?
Would absolutely love to see us beat the Villa and I think we have a great chance, the pressure is pretty much off now, I just hope that results in good, relaxed football rather than a lackadaisical attitude – but I’m sure Roy will have them well drilled on the importance of being mathematically safe and won’t allow any passengers.
Let’s kick on and get in the top half lads! Every place gained this season makes us more attractive to any overseas players we are almost certainly following, 9th is a hell of a lot more impressive than 16th
Onwards and upwards to the top half Baggies
Report abuse
9 – so you would flog him cos you can do a lot with 15 million – what exactly can you do with it ??
Maybe you could buy a striker who would score around 15 goals a season…. oh hang on, we got that now aint we….
Bottom line is we don’t need to sell to buy, we have our prem status for next yr all but sorted and a manager who can develop the club and establish us… no longer are we buying with a view to likely relegation.

Can i come out to play again after yesterdays offering?
Honestly, Im damned if i do and im damned if i dont. Im only taking an interest in the affairs of your fine “club”. I cant belive after all this time old Lone still brings out the worst in some of the baggy faithful. Even me old pal TRBH turned nasty ( which aint good for a man of his years )
I only mentioned in passing, that Peter O will be off close season ( ok. maybee we didnt agree on the fee ) and i get slaughterd, while today i find the faithful discussing the same topic with no nastys.
If most of you get so upset with un-biased, neutral, benign, fair minded opinions which Lone puts forward in his even handed fashion, then perhaps you may need to realise its you that has the problem. It hurts me so so deepley when i see ive upset you all so much, ( again ) it really does.
I think you need the calming influence of the Rocket back from his holidays, he knows how to handel old Lone.
You should all be so happy, what with the Baggys staying up while the Wolves may be going down. But some folks, im afraid, aint ever happy. (Except happybaggie of course, hes always happy.)
Its a good job old Lones got a jolly thick skin, or he may think you didnt like him. haha.
Try to be less tribal and welcome the objective views of others.
And if you belive any of that, you will belive anything.

If I hadn’t seen you on here before I’d think you were Shadrag in disguise. Happy and Warren are spot on, even with £20 mill how would we replace him? Look at Sunderland since Bent left. If he becomes unsettled then it’s a different matter but until then we should hang on to him for dear life.
We struck lucky in getting a potential 15+ goals a season PL striker. Just because we only paid £1 mill for him we shouldn’t think we’ll just go out and find another. As Roy said the other day, we’ve got PO, Dorrans and Mulumbu for less than £2 mill in total and credit to Dan Ashworth but we can’t guarantee he can keep pulling rabbits from hats.
If we got £15 mill it would barely buy us Doyle and Fletcher would it.

I agree with everything you have said, if we sell Odemwingie what are the chances of us pulling off another such great signing?
We could get ten mill for him and end up with Nathan Ellington/Luke Moore/Craig Beattie type replacements for the same amount of money, and I know which I’d prefer.
Just consider Duke, I was full of excitement when he came to us after the wonders he worked at Wigan, but he just never looked the same player for us… He was undoubtedly talented, but (as with Roy at Liverpool?)he just didnt suit our team – or more likely we didn’t suit him judging by the effort it looked like he put in most games, and he cost over double the money of St.Pete. Once you have a player like him, you have to try and cling on…

Both St. Peter and agent have stated he’s happy where he is. The bloke is 29 and may not want to risk another move where, for say
£15million, he doesn’t succeed quite as well as he has here. Then his confidence slips slowly away and it’s back to Russia With(out) Love. JP knows how to reward with longer contracts. Let’s leave the problem with the professionals.

If we sell him whos gonna score our goals. Hope we dont sell him, we havent had a striker like him who could score at the highest level since the regis days I think. You dont find someone like him very often, even a big name might not make it. Dont sell him or we might as well go down this year what difference does it make, we should have learnt from previous mistakes no matter in what level.

why cant we just build on what weve got, roys saying he wouldnt like to start again, by letting our best players go, so some ones got to listen to him, obviously we cant keep pullin rabbits out the hat like he said the other day, if we stay up (likely) then lets concentrate on building to stay safe or finish higher, boing boing

No player or manager is bigger than the club but to make the club bigger we have to start hanging on to our best players. We can carry on playing our part by making them feel wanted rather than booing them when things go wrong. I’m sure JP will play his part by making it financially comfortable.
If we lose Peter Odemwingie we will be back to square one as far as strikers are concerned. Let’s make our club one that good players find attractive.
It’s how Liverpool became such a big club. In the 1950′s they were a bit of a joke club. Bill Shankley changed that, he made everyone including the fans a part of the club and it’s why their players have always remained loyal. Liverpool fans don’t get on their player’s backs.

Ishmael Miller must look towards Simon Cox to rediscover his energy and passion for the game.
Neil Warnock has rarely used Ish while on loan at QPR, because he simply is not fit enough. He’s not a good trainer and is influenced too much by his old Manchester friends. He has a long and well paid contract at The Hawthorns, but is not working hard enough at repaying that faith. A sorry state of affairs.
Simon Cox, however, is another matter altogether. The family moved from their home near Shinfield on the outskirts of Reading to the Midlands to show him backing and commitment. His father is his manager. He’s one of the best trainers at our Walsall HQ – even other players tell you that – and he works constantly on his ball control and fitness levels.
A tale of two strikers. Coxy, for me, is in the long tradition of Albion men who are appreciated by The Hawthorns crowd for their work-rate and never-say-die approach to the game. We work hard for our money and don’t like shirkers. Stick with him (he’s nearly 24) and he will produce the goods.

Hope to see more of your posts. I agree completely about Ellington. A friend of mine saw him watching a friend of his play for Cheadle Town and asked him why he’d left Wigan for West Brom (at the time we were both relegation fodder so it was probably seen by some as a sideward step), he laughed and replied “because they’ve doubled my wages”. That probably tells you a lot about his commitment and desire.
JohnnyGiles
There were a few Odemwingie moaners, but you’ll always get some who focus on negatives. If we cast our minds back to the August transfer window last year and 2 years previous, our survival hopes were pinned upon acquiring a top-class centre-forward to help us keep the ball up top, bring our classy midfielders into play in the right areas and score goals. Prior to signing Odemwingie, we were in despair at being unable to find one. That’s how it’ll be this August again if we let him go, then what good’s £15m?
TRBH
As always I generalyl agree with your post (29). I’m not sure Christian Poulsen would agree Liverpool fans never barrack their own players though!! Then there’s also the old some for Djimi Traore- don’t blame it on the Hamann, don’t blame it on the Finnan, don’t blame on the Biscan, blame it on Traore!! He just can’t, he just can’t, he just can’t control his feet!!

How are you mate? Good point about PO, perhaps Roy leaving him out at Stoke and Blues helped him realise he wasn’t nailed on to play and that’s helped his ‘fitness’ issues. He’s been a different player since.

I see on the propoganda pages…. sorry, transfer rumour pages, that Spurs will be quoted “in excess” of £10 million for St Peter.
I really wish the paper would say where these rumours are taken from cos I can’t see anyone at the club discussing selling him, and what does “in excess of” actually mean – is it 10 million and £1 pound or £100 million cos they are both “in excess” of £10 million.
We all know that every player has his price, and I’m sure Peter’s is in excess of £10 million – but I would love to know if these “rumours” are really out there and if so, where…

Give Cox A Chance
Some interesting observations there. How do you know most of this?
I must admit that I once had a look at Ishmael Miller’s page on a popular social networking site, there seemed to be a lot of pictures of him with his ex-Man City trainees and various different attractive blondes and I know he used to regularly attend a student night near where I live during the week. I’m not saying he’s the only footballer who has an active social life, but he did seem to be enjoying himself a lot!!
Even beyond that though, I think Cox has got more to his game to succeed at this level. His finishing and movement is top-class, in some ways it’s a shame his time with us has coincided with the almost universal shift to 4-5-1 where the 1 is more often than not a big or pacy lad. Hopefully he’ll get his chance at some point.

If rumours in London-based newspapers are to be believed, Spurs have been chasing about 3.500 players in the last couple of years. With Harry in charge, that’s half-believable. Less believable is that they’ve included Ronaldo, Messi, Nesta, Cannavarro, Buffon, Casillas, Benzema, Rooney, Xavi.
It always seems to be Spurs. It’s either wishful thinking on the part of Redknapp/Levy or wishful thinking of behalf of some affiliated Southern journalists. I’m tempted to think the latter having read a few match reports of our game at the weekend. Also, £10m??? If we got £6m for Kamara, I don’t think there’s an earthly chance Odemwingie will leave for £10m barring a clause of some sort.
The time we really need to worry is when Harry comes out publicly and says “I like Odemwingie he’s a good player, but he’s a West Brom player and he’s under contract so that’s a no-goer…….”

I think Cox and Wood are the future for our frontline, since the day we signed cox I have been waiting for him to get a sustained run in the team, and now its happening he isn’t disappointing.
It’s obvious he has ability and the workrate to match, and it was just about waiting for the time he produced a screamer like the one on Saturday.
As for him being appreciated by the fans, I think that is true of the majority, but a certain number of cretins will only start backing him now he is off the mark.
I only manage to get to around 15 games a season as I’m not local and am priced out (£50 just to get off this poxy White island) of many games, but at the Liverpool game, the last I went to, people behind me were berating him constantly – the most intelligent heckle being “******* ell Coxy you should be on the end of that” when he was the one playing the pass. In the modern 4-5-1 system there is always room for a Bomber Brown. Cox may well succeed in that role and a few of us have been waiting patiently for the kid to find the right key to the door. Saturday he earned praise from Harry Redknapp himself, “a world class goal” his assessment. Normally I just manage a ‘Yes’ and a big grin at an equaliser,
but I suspect the near neighbours, both Saddlers, thought Walsall had plonked in the winner at Bescot, a good 2 miles away. The finest goal I have ever seen was Ronnie Allen’s against Newcastle at the Hawthorns, FA Cup 1953. Bomber did a supreme second at Sheffield Wednesday when we lost 2-1 in the Cup. Cyrille managed some beauties. Simon Cox’s goal gets to be mentioned in that cluster of classics.
