The Manchester City youngster made a flying start to his Saddlers career by scoring on his debut against Barnsley.

Evans was added to the ranks after Sam Mantom picked up an ankle injury in the defeat to Chesterfield.

"It's an initial month and we'll see where we are at the end of it," Smith said.

"George is a player who has fitted in really well.

"With the injury to Sam Mantom it was a position we needed to strengthen.

"We have got Adam Chambers, who has been more restricted to a defensive midfield role this season but has excelled.

"Then we have young lads in Reece Flanagan and Liam Kinsella. I just felt we needed someone in there who had played more games at this level."

Meanwhile, skipper Chambers is set to celebrate his 200th appearance for Walsall at Colchester today and is hoping to mark the occasion with a win.

"When I'm out on the pitch I won't be thinking about my 200th game – it will all be about getting a positive result," he said.

"Playing for Walsall has been a very enjoyable part of my career and I'm hoping that I can top it off with a successful season this year.

"There have been a few highlights. The Wembley run was very memorable and we've had some big games at the Banks's against Wolves and Preston.

"Now it's important that we try to get the win today."

Chambers saw his twin brother and former Saddler James retire from the professional game last season.

But the 34-year-old revealed he is looking into the possibility of becoming a coach when he hangs up his boots.

"Dean Smith is a very good manager and I've known him and his assistant Richard O'Kelly for a long time," Chambers added.

"They make it a learning environment and encourage everyone to work hard and keep improving no matter how old you are.

"I'm thinking of going into coaching after I finish playing, and here is a great place to learn."
