Walsall boss Dean Smith has heaped praise on skipper Adam Chambers, believing the midfielder has the same leadership qualities as Steven Gerrard.

The 34-year-old was handed the captain's armband at the beginning of the 2014-15 campaign following Andy Butler's move to Sheffield United.

Adam and his twin brother James are expected to sign contract extensions offered to them by Smith when they return from holiday next week.

And the boss admits he was pleased with the way Adam grew in stature as skipper throughout last season.

"The advice I gave him was go and be yourself," Smith said. "You have to be yourself, I'm myself as a manager and Adam is a leader by example.

"I did a study while doing my Pro Licence about choosing a captain.

"The three I chose to talk about were William Gallas, who was captain of Arsenal at the time, John Terry at Chelsea and the other was Steven Gerrard.

"I would put Adam in the Gerrard category, where he goes out and plays as well as he can and leads by example.

"There are not many John Terrys around, as leaders. Gallas was made captain of Arsenal I think at the time to keep him onside!

"There are different ways of choosing a captain, but I have always said when you choose, you have to be sure it is someone who will be in the team every week. If Adam is fit and playing to his best he is certainly one you want in the team."

Despite their impressive showings last season, Smith knows the Chambers twins can't go on forever with the pair turning 35 in November.

"It will come to a point - and I have spoken to them both about it - when old father time kicks in," Smith said.

"It could be three months or it could be three years. In terms of the football club we will have to do what is best for us.

"But Adam played 50-odd games last season and that is down to how professional he is, how he manages himself and also how we look after him and manage him as well."

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed Walsall will be unseeded when the draw for the first round of the Capital One Cup takes place on Tuesday.
