The 30-year-old has become the latest player to put pen to paper on a new contract at the Banks's Stadium.

He believes the Saddlers are capable of competing in the top half of League One next term, but adds they will need to build momentum early.

He said: "With a good start to the season and some momentum, I can see no reason whatsoever why we can't be up there challenging.

"There are no real stand-out teams and with the quality we have here, we have to aim as high as we can."

O'Connor made 35 appearances for the Saddlers after joining as a free agent a year ago.

But only in the final third of the campaign did he discover any consistent form, after getting a run of games at centre-half

He said: "It was a frustrating first six months, the first time I had really been looking to get a run of games together for the best part of two years.

"I came through it and after Christmas I was happy with my performances, especially at centre-half.

"At this stage of my career I would say it was my preferred position. When I was younger I was a right-back but I have played as a centre-back for hundreds of games."

O'Connor is the fifth Saddler to agree terms since the end of the season, following Paul Downing and youngsters Amadou Bakayoko, Liam Kinsella and Craig MacGillivray.

Talks are ongoing with captain Adam Chambers and twin brother James, while Walsall are hopeful of retaining goalkeeper Liam Roberts and forward Jordan Murphy.
