An FA Cup third round tie at Wycombe Wanderers looked to be the ideal chance of success but, again, Villa could not get the job done.

The claret and blues did lead when captain Micah Richards side-footed home, but Joe Jacobson's penalty secured a replay for the hosts.

Villa defender Ashley Westwood was adjudged to have caught Matt Bloomfield with a flailing arm, with Jacobson stepping up to fire home the spot kick.

Wycombe squandered four fine openings in the first-half as they refused to be overawed, Garry Thompson prodding wide from eight yards while Sam Wood wasted three promising scenarios.

Villa made them pay when Carles Gil cut in off the right and fed Richards, lurking on the cusp of the box, who stroked the ball into the net.

Villa failed to build on that advantage, though, perhaps relieved to reach half-time with the 1-0 lead.

Wood volleyed high and wide from point-blank range after Bloomfield's cross, handing Villa a real reprieve.

They failed to build on that advantage and it cost them after Westwood's clumsy challenge on Bloomfield, with Jacobson levelling.
