Only hard work can offer Villa any hope of keeping their top-flight status, according to Villa boss Remi Garde.

The Frenchman saw his Villa side dismantled by Everton in a demoralising defeat on Saturday – two weeks after hopes had been raised by a battling draw against Manchester City.

But he insists his squad possess enough quality to win their unlikely fight for Premier League survival.

"I still think we have qualities in this team – and in the next game we have to show this," he said.

"There are a lot of games to play. We will fight for every point – and we will continue that against Watford this next weekend.

"We have to carry on working hard. I said that to the players because nothing is finished, nothing is done."

Garde added: "In the first half, it wasn't a question of spirit – maybe we were too light, we didn't win enough duels.

"The key for us is to work hard all together."

The boss was backed up by his skipper Micah Richards who added: "You have to keep your head held high.

"I am positive we can get out of this. We have to keep working hard."
