The claret and blues trailed at the break to Phil Jagielka's opener, before further goals from Romelu Lukaku and Seamus Coleman.

The Toffees went ahead in the 18th minute when Jagielka headed home, after flinging himself at an excellent right-wing cross from Leighton Baines.

Romelu Lukaku doubled the hosts' lead three minutes after the break with goalkeeper Brad Guzan red-faced, after letting a weak effort squirm under his body.

Coleman tapped in a third goal with 14 minutes to go, Baines sliding the ball into his path for the easiest of finishes into the net.

The closest Villa got to opening their account was when Alan Hutton curled a shot just wide, as they left Goodison Park soundly beaten.
