IN PICTURES: Car smashes into shop and bursts into flames

These dramatic images show the aftermath of a crash which saw a car smash into a shop and burst into flames.

When ambulance crews arrived at the scene shortly after 3.10am this morning they found the car - which also had a damaged roof - empty, leading to calls for the occupants to seek medical help for fear that they could have suffered life changing injuries.

Murray MacGregor, a West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman, said: "Given where the car ended up and the level of damage, we have serious concerns for whoever was inside it when it crashed. There was no-one at the scene.

"Our concern is that they could have head, neck or back injuries and could have suffered burns. All of these injuries could lead to life changing conditions. We would urge them to seek medical help as soon as possible."

The smash happened at the junction of Ladypool Road and Oldfield Road in the Balsall Heath area of Birmingham.

No-one was in the property above the shop unit.
