Delays and disruption as electrical failure between Wolverhampton and Birmingham cancels trains

Rail passengers across the West Midlands faced major disruption today after an electrical failure caused trains to be cancelled.

The problem with overhead lines between Wolverhampton and Birmingham affected those travelling between the two cities, as well as those travelling on to Stafford and Shrewsbury.

Network Rail spokeswoman, Rachel Groves, said: "Virgin trains are stopping short at Birmingham and London Midland trains were also affected. CrossCountry diesel trains are currently still running."

She added: "We have teams out looking at the lines and the investigation is currently on-going.

"We are advising passengers to check before their travel by taking a look on the network rail enquiries website which will let them know which services are running."

London Midland posted on Twitter to say trains between Wolverhampton, Shrewsbury and Birmingham had been cancelled.

CrossCountry and the Midland Metro service were accepting London Midland rail tickets between Birmingham and Wolverhampton.

A London Midland spokesperson said that the fault has now been fixed, but that delays remain.
