Talks between Labour and the Liberal Democrat leaders have been 'progressing well' according to the latter party chief Ian Shires.

Labour hold 28 seats, the most of any group, following last week's local election.

The most likely scenario is that they form a partnership with the Lib Dems' two councillors to take control of the authority.

Earlier this week Councillor Shires and Councillor Sean Coughlan, who heads up the Labour group, admitted thrashing out a deal could take right up until the full council meeting near the end of the month when the new leaders would be due to to be sworn in.

But Councillor Shires stated it is likely an agreement could be made between the two groups by Tuesday.

He said: "Talks are ongoing but they are progressing well. It is now just a case of making everybody happy. Hopefully we will know more by next week.

"I would hope we have come to an agreement by Tuesday."
