The Wolverhampton South East MP will chair the Labour In group alongside Sedgefield MP Phil Wilson following a vote by Labour MPs yesterday.

It comes in the wake of his controversial sacking as shadow spokesman for Europe by Jeremy Corbyn over claims he had been disloyal.

Mr McFadden said the position would give him the platform he wanted to promote Britain's role in the EU.

"I am pleased to have been elected co-chair of the Parliamentary Labour Party's Labour In group," he said.

"The forthcoming EU referendum is a crucial decision for our country in terms of jobs and investment, our strength and influence and our collective security.

"I look forward to playing whatever part I can in the campaign for the UK to remain in the EU in the months to come."

Mr McFadden was sacked as part of Labour leader Mr Corbyn's cabinet reshuffle over comments he made in Parliament in the aftermath of the Paris terror attacks.
