Stafford Borough Council leader Mike Heenan is facing calls for him to be removed from office over allegations he has failed to disclose the true extent of his financial interests.

Councillor Heenan holds a number of high-profile business and charitable posts including a role in the Freemasons.

An extraordinary meeting to consider removing him as leader of the authority has been arranged after a request from five councillors stating it is now a criminal offence for councillors not to declare financial interests under new laws.

He said: "This is a matter for the council to discuss."

Councillor Heenan has previously apologised for 'mistakenly' omitting some of the positions he holds from a public register of interests. His updated records show he holds 10 'employment' roles and various additional charitable and public body posts.

He is a director of Deans chartered accountants in Stafford as well as being listed as a non-executive director at Beverley Building Society and a non-executive chairman and director of investment company The Inglewood Investment Co Ltd in Stafford. He is also a non-executive chairman and director of building developers TIIC Ltd, an unpaid consultant at Stafford FM, and the company secretary at land and property firm Greatrex Ltd as well as having four further company secretary roles.

The meeting calling on Mr Heenan to be removed from his top council post will take place on April 10.

Independent councillor Rob Stephens, who quit the Stafford Conservatives last year, said: "The Leader of the Council, Cllr Michael R Heenan has admitted to the Council that he 'made a mistake' on his statutory declaration of interests."
